  • Post FI jobs - part time reserve baggage handler! Fly for free! Other ideas?

I have a friend that works 6-12 hrs a week as a reserve baggage handler at the airport for Delta.  He, spouse and kids get to fly anywhere for free on Standby!  He does it as a side job to his construction job since it’s so flexible.  He has family in New Zealand and it’s about $8000 to fly there - he goes twice a year for free.  This year he took his daughters to Paris and Greece too.  Once I hit FI - I would definitely consider this...

Any other cool jobs to do after you are FI?

I would love to learn more about building houses and then build and live in for two years and sell for capital gains and build another and so on....

Are there any part time jobs that get you health ins? Maybe teach part time at a school? (Maybe they don’t pay the premium,  can buy insurance cheap?)

That's amazing, actually. Wow! Free flights for the whole family? Sign me up.

My wife is doing some substitute teaching. I don't know if she has any access to insurance, though. I should definitely ask.

Costco jobs offer insurance, but I don't know how many hours you'd have to work. There's also the free samples perk, although you don't have to be an employee to get those.

I've got some family that has the non-rev passenger deal. Works great when there are seats. Flip side is that there are full days where they literally sit in the airport waiting for a seat that never opens up and they head home. Good deal for folks that are flexible enough, but I suspect many would not enjoy a life that requires that level of patience.

Handling peoples baggage sounds demoralizing, especially after you spend your entire career doing it...

Domestically - yeah, the computer algorithms know how to keep the planes full, but mid-week international is pretty routinely available according to him.

I dunno - I can do anything 6 hrs a week - and being around planes sounds fun - maybe just a year or two and fly international for free....hmmmm

my biggest issue is my kids are younger and in school -

after working as an attending i would be very surprised if many of us could do something like handle baggage.

i am NOT disparaging the people who do that, i'm glad they do and if they get free flights that's awesome for them.

i just think a lot of us tend to think we could go back to having a boss, not making decisions, doing hard work for $10/hr, and the like and the reality is many of us would quit after a week!

I could definitely work like that, and there probably are a few more menial type jobs I would really enjoy. But the truth is you're absolutely right, it would be the system you couldnt stand, the managers who are clearly idiots, the inefficiencies, etc...it would drive you nuts, and since you dont have to take it, you wouldnt.

Going for customer service phone person, gate agent gig.  Keep those heavy bags to a minimum.

I think it would be cool to run a shuttle service for mountain bikers or backpackers. You just buy a van, throw up a website, and then drive interesting people to the good local hiking spots and you can charge a good amount of money. I have seen shuttles that will not come out for less than 160$ for what must be less than a 3hr round trip for them. I would simply drive the crew to the trailhead, get their life story which is probably interesting since they are backpackers and then go do an out and back after I drop them off or enjoy the rest of my day doing doing whatever the heck I want since it’s probably like 9 am by the time I get back.

also I think being a white water rafting guide would be pretty awesome or someone who takes guides snow mobile tours depending on where you live. Maybe ski patrol if that's your jam, but I imagine there is annoying paperwork with that job.

I wonder if I could handle it better - precisely because if I’m FI then IDGAF

Ive actually thought about working at starbucks.  I think it would be fun just to make drinks for people and interact with them.

I think its opposite, hard to handle that kind of thing. And are you really FI if you have to sling luggage for trips?

There are many different everyday jobs I could do, but some horrible system to be a cog in wouldnt really work. You're too smart and couldnt keep quiet about how you could just "make this a little better". I could have a pool servicing route/company, lawn care, etc....coffee shop/bike would be awesome but thats either all solo or as some kind of owner/partner where you get to make decisions.

You could teach of course at local CC or university, that would be fun. Im sure theres tons of fun jobs, but something in an airport system would be little fun I think, they are very high strung of course.

Funny you mention this.  I've long wanted to own a little coffee shop.  Getting a black apron at Starbucks would be an interesting endeavor, but as Zaphod mentions, it'd be hard to just be a worker bee at the bottom of the food chain.  I was bummed when Dutch Bros turned off their franchising option for non-affiliates.  So that leaves an independent gig.  I think it would be a good tax write off too--it seems that many of the places I vacation tend to grow coffee and there is always market research...  Ultimately, the fact that I would have "to make drinks for people and interact with them" is the exact reason I will likely never pull the trigger!
