Wife prefers paying for business class. And when by herself(conference, trips meeting with friends) I support her 100%. She works/earns. Go for it. But when the family goes, no way, my kids deserve business class. Nor should they get used to it. I barely deserve it and I work full time. Of course when buying the tickets, she always muses out loud about upgrading. So I always say(without honestly trying to make it a hard no) that she and my daughter can upgrade. Us XY mongrels don't need such niceties. But then that's always interpreted as a "No" which it isn't. Is this proposal unreasonable? 3-5 hours being 40 ft separated instead of 1-3 ft separated isn't such a hardship is it?

Gordon Ramsey and his wife flew business/first and jammed his kids in the rear with the gear. So the kids miss out on a hot towel and cookie; they’ll live.
Some of my most enjoyable flights were in the rear: I brought the FAs large, milk chocolate bars and as a result, I got to stretch my legs in the galley, get some good conversation with nice people with a hard job, and on occasion some left overs from the front.

I do agree with the idea too. If the kids are old enough to be "alone" Let them rough it on the way to their free vacation. If they are too young to sit alone I would either recommend just the wife take first class and you can hang with the kid(s) or everyone stays together.
Take my words with a grain of salt because I might be the second cheapest MFer alive.

My husband often gets upgraded to comfort plus because he's got status on delta due to work travel. I don't care at all. My 5 yo always insists on sitting next to me so my flight is gonna be hard no matter what. And since we have 2 kids we don't all get to sit together anyway. If we were talking first class maybe I'd care?

I have just started flying enhanced coach and business class (international). We have not recently had an international vacation with kids, and I will cross that bridge if/when I come to it. My inclination is to let the kids stay in coach until they can afford to pay for the upgrade. I will let you y'all know when the time comes.
