  • Whats your no-show rate?

Curious across specialties. And what you do to minimize.

<0% , even if one misses an appointment there is always some one else just showing up un announced

True no shows , less than one a day which is 3-4%

Psychiatry at the VA. No show rate like 5-10%? Apparently I'm an outlier though as the dept recently said our no show rate has increased during the pandemic and is like 20%. I can only wish for a rate that high ;-)

Family practice pcp. My average is out to about 5%. However that would be closest to one a day but that never seems to be the case. It is generally three or four in a day and then none for a couple of days.

Our policy is if you have three no shows you can be eliminated from the practice. Most of the other physicians are quite soft and ignore this policy but I do not. My no show rate is much better than everybody else's.

My personal no-show rate is 100%.

As in, I show up to work 0% of the time.

          Cheers!

But several of us work zero. Just a humble brag.
            Cheers!

              On some days 100% show.

On some days 40% no show.

              Average is 10-15% no-show

Academic position now--no show rate 10%.

I did have a family practice once upon a time. My partner and I had almost a complete open scheduling clinic. If someone called in for an appointment, they got in that day or the next day or so. We didn't encourage patients to schedule patients ahead of time. When their prescriptions were down to no refills, then they needed to come in, and we did no refills over the phone. We would remind patients for annual exams or need to be seen to follow certain problems. We had a busy practice--most days we each saw 30-35 patients. What was surprising was that every day was the same. We didn't have slow days and overly busy days. Patients loved it. Our patient panels were around 3,000 each, in a rural area.

No show rate for this clinic--rare to ever have a no show. Maybe 1 a week. We did this for 15 years.

I had another clinic for 5 years that was a more classical practice and had a 3 no-show and you're gone policy. Lots of no shows--but then they were gone.

15-17% across multiple offices. I feel like it is higher at mine.

Much less lately. Around 5%. Depends on weather—too bad or too nice. The first really nice day after a period of blah days is probably the highest.

Family med, probably one a day at the most.

3-5% for me. Slightly higher for my partners. If I open a day late... meaning those appointment wait LESS time to see me, I have more no shows. Those who choose to wait... wont miss the appointment.
However, day falls apart with lots of snow. Can be 50% no shows then (rare though).

Couple of weeks ago we had a blizzard and half my schedule canceled. But 9 out of 10 of them called and canceled. I do not consider that a no-show.

However if somebody repeatedly cancel same day I will ding them. Unfortunately a lot of this is subjective and based on circumstances.

In all honesty that blizzard I mentioned was only 6 to 9 in. I made it into work just fine. The roads were fine. I generally do not get agitated until they start calling for at least two feet of snow. Even then I only have a 3 mile drive to work so I can get there eventually going very slowly.

About one third no-show in resident clinic most likely... but a fair amount of trauma patients go to jail after surgery or hospital d/c. It's not technically non-compliance if you are locked up. I really don't know exacts since the fellows usually just call me if it's a wound care or other significant complication they want an attending to look at.

Others get turf to gen surg, ortho, etc upon hospital d/c... so who knows if they make it.

I assume a lot don't follow up anywhere... until ER if infected, out of Rx, etc. Fun times.
