Do you have a dash cam? Or have any recommendations ?

Was hit recently and the other party denies the responsibility. No witnesses . Luckily , no one was injured .

I had a dashcam before I had a Tesla. The problem is that the suction cup kept falling off in the hot south carolina summers. In the end that prevented its real use. $100 down the drain. Plus the pain of a long power cord snaking to the gas lighter.

        Tesla has solved it.

All my cars have dash cams. Definitely could save you a lot of headache/heartache in the event of an accident.

I've been happy with the Garmin Dash Cam Mini. Has an app that is easy to connect to your phone to review footage if something does happen. Small. Suction stayed intact all summer without any issues.

I have a Blackvue 750 dashcam. It can either be single or dual cameras. I have the dual version and paid a stereo shop to install it (~$180). I didn't feel like running a wire from front to back trying to hide the wire under the trim. It is connected to my car battery so it can record when the car is off. Video quality is ok. There are newer more expensive versions.

Wife has a Viofo Duo 129. It's cheaper than the Blackvue cams. Also two cams and had the stereo shop install it. Video quality is good but the interface can be clunky to work with. Also installed it so it can record when vehicle off by connecting it to the car battery.

Both cams have worked fine. I rarely check the video as the novelty wears off. I did record a wrong way driver one morning to work. Lucky have avoided car accidents.

Police have been evaluating accidents for roughly 100 years without dash cams. I don’t see the need for one.

Police don’t care about accidents or who is at fault for crashes that don’t involve injury/death or major damage. A couple of years ago my wife was involved in an accident where she was established in a turn lane and another driver going the same way merged into her. The police came and filed a report and cited the other driver. In spite of that, the other driver’s insurance fought it, saying it was either no fault or my wife’s fault. It went to some type of mediation, but in the meantime we had paid out of pocket to meet the deductible to get her car fixed (damage to 2 panels was way more expensive than any of us had anticipated). It was almost a year from her accident before it was finally decided in our favor. If we’d had a dash cam it would have taken about 10 seconds.

I don’t see how your story implies the police not caring. Looks to me like they got it right and the other side’s insurance company just dragged it out for some reason. Regardless, I have no issue with other people wanting dash cams, or ring cams, or anything else like it. I just don’t see a lot of point to it. I’ve been in and around many accidents. They’ve always been adjudicated fairly.

Because they really don’t care. They got there and listened to each side’s story for a couple of minutes, made a decision and left. There was no “investigation” of any sort, so in situations where it’s a he said she said kind of deal without a major injury or major damage, they don’t care. I have a friend who’s on a major metropolis police department (and who previously worked for NYPD) and he’s told me before that they don’t give a rat’s a** about those minor fender benders and spend almost zero time on them. Yes in this case it worked in our favor, but depending on the mood of the cop you get that day it may go against you.

No one is saying you have to have one, I just think it’s a mistake to assume that the cops a) care, or b) get it right every time.

OK, we both agree we can do what we want regarding dash cams. But consider a fender bender from the perspective of the police. How much time should they spend on a traffic accident without apparent injury? Minor property damage that will be settled by insurance versus any other crime: It seems to me they probably prioritize about right.

You are in a fender bender that is not your fault. Other driver claims they injured their back/neck, goes to one of the ambulance chasers advertising on billiboards/TV, and you get handed a lawsuit claiming damages far in excess of the value of the vehicles involved. That dashcam footage will be invaluable.

It’s possible you are excessively concerned about liability. I’m sure I’ve been sued at least once this way. I never paid much attention since the insurance company took care of it.

People suck! I guess it says a lot about their character if they are unwilling to own up to an honest mistake.

I don’t disagree with any of that, but it’s an inconvenience to have to deal with the back and forth of an insurance investigation for something that could easily be settled by watching a :30 video. We all pay for things that provide some type of insurance or coverage or assurance for things we do. Spending a couple hundred bucks to be able to avoid dumb situations like dealing with an insurance company of some lady who changes lanes into other cars without looking and then tries to blame the other driver seems worth it to me. Also, how else do you expect me to be able to rack up some sweet internet karma on r/idiotsincars?
