Kipping pullups are dumb. I'll make an exception if you are training them to do muscle ups.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a non-kipping muscle up in real life. There always seems to be a bit of kip in there. I'm sure there is some gymnast out there that could do a perfectly strict one.

I love pull ups. I have a pull up bar in one of my offices. When I'm there that's my arm day. I'll try to throw up 200 pull ups over the course of the day. The sets will range from 1-7. I try and mix it up. Some are micro kipped. Some are from being still with the shoulders partially engaged. Some are from a still full dead hang. Some are chin ups. Some are half chin/half pull ups. Some are arms spread out. Some are hands together. Some are one handed, aided with the other hand crimping the top of the door frame with with a range of 2-4 fingers. I pulled my middle finger when trying one finger(middle). So I don't do that anymore. When I used to do pull contests with my daughter, I would try to do 3x her count. In those contests I would kip.

You should try to train for a full one handed pull up. That's an impressive feat even for someone who doesn't weigh very much (which is really the best trait for pullups).

        • I feel like I've hit a wall. Between age, weight training for size, and running 5k for time, something has to give. I can get stronger but that means bigger and that means slower at my age. Or I can get leaner and faster, but that means weaker. There are some young bucks who can run a sub 20 5k and bench 225 but that's not in the cards for me.

I’ve pondered trying and have said no, but your urging is slotting it for reconsideration. In my eyes that’d be a huge flex.

              Seriously. It would be.

I know a quite a number of gym rats; none can do it. The only people who I know of who can are very serious climbers. I'm sure there are competitive gymnasts who can, I just don't know any of them.

I bet you could accomplish it after a steroid cycle...

Yeah, that's tough. I've got an early 40s friend who can do sub 20min 5K, sub 3h marathon, and benches a good bit more than 225. He spends minimum 15 hours a week either training or reading about/planning his training. Interestingly he didn't start until 30. Of course he has no kids and incredibly flexible job. Also no PEDs.

                  • Does being fit correlate to narcissism? I think so. Trying to figure out if it's bad though.

Depends. Do you walk around in a sleeveless shirt in public?

Yes I do when I exercise. Other times no. Well, if I exercise in the AM and it's my day off, then I don't change.

How do you define narcissism? There’s a difference between self-confidence and being narcissistic. Maybe narcissism leads to people being on the fitter side than vice versa.

I’d say no from my experience. Being fit is hard work and takes a lot of self discipline. Narcissists don’t actually put in the work, they just like to think they do and feel like everyone else thinks they do. I remember working with a narcissist who made a big deal about how he was going to run a marathon, when I doubted he was actually training for it. After the marathon I asked him how it went. He made up some excuse of how someone else prevented him from running it. That’s more like typical narcissist behavior. I think sometimes fit people can look down on people who aren’t fit but that’s different from narcissism.

Not really, but if ur fit, you usually get more attention from others, so it could be more of a cause & effect phenomenon.
