  • Free Money Anyone? - Unclaimed Property Search

Very often I search for unclaimed funds for myself, my friends, family members and clients. You can do the same. You would be surprised what you find. You should search in every state where you have lived - which might be many due to medical school, residency, fellowship and practicing (and it's free).

Not sure I follow...why would I have unclaimed property I didn't know about?

Unclaimed property (sometimes referred to as abandoned) refers to accounts in financial institutions and companies that have had no activity generated or contact with the owner for one year or a longer period. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividends or payroll checks, refunds, traveler's checks, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders or gift certificates (in some states), insurance payments or refunds and life insurance policies, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility security deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes.

Thanks for the tip. I found two items - one from undergraduate and one from medical school. Oddly the medical school one was a hit from the medical school itself and I am still in the same place for residency (and soon to be fellowship). They easily could have found me if desired.

Edit: Looked for my boyfriend too. Unfortunately he has a very common name (mine is very uncommon) so there were a ton of hits that were not him. It's amazing how many people have money sitting out there.

Claimed several thousand dollars from my Dad's life insurance policies.

Also found old cell phone refunds for my brother, sister, and brother-in-law.

And a insurance premium refund for my Mom.

My FIL did this for all his family a while back and I hit. My former office had set aside my CME allowance a few years back but I hadn't used it. Claimed it and paid taxes on it year I got it.
