  • Any fancy car drivers out there? (or dreamers?)

Anyone have a sweet car they get enjoyment from driving? At what NW status did you purchase it? Any regrets?

I'd love something along the lines of a Porsche Turbo S... someday.

What’s your definition of a fancy car? Costs more than 100k?

My goal was once I had 1M in retirement accounts that I could splurge.

I will be ordering a Porsche Taycan S in a couple months - probably will set me back 130-140k.

Just a thought, not a thing wrong with a splurging using “unrestricted” assets/wealth. Seems like the cookie jar should exclude retirement accounts.
NW excluding retirement assets would seem to be a more appropriate metric.
Outside of taxes and retirement, spend as you wish.

A couple of decades ago I was thinking of buying a Boxter. But better senses prevailed and I struck with Honda / Toyota / Subaru vehicles.

Now if it is not an EV I will not fancy it. High end gasoline cars have outrageous routine maintenance costs, that shoot up further once they are out of warranty. My friend paid $2500 for routine service on a 6 year old Mercedes and thinks the next one could be as high as $5K. And this is for a low end model.

I could have bought the Tesla model X but the gull wings put me and my spouse off from buying it. It would have been a fancy SUV for us had it had regular or even sliding doors, like a minivan.

Last 3 vehicles have been rebuilt titles, about half the price of used KBB value. Recently finished paying student loans, so thinking I might splurge on a certified used for the next one

Kidding aside, we'll be replacing the family vehicle in the next year or so. Budgeting $25-30k for this seems astronomical to me.

Define 'fancy' = above what the individual believes is baseline. For many in this forum, anything above mainline Camry is considered fancy.

Using that - Initial splurge was Audi A4 - when NW was about 1M and then Inifitni G37 a few years later.

Didn't really splurge with our Tesla until reached beachbum FI. ---

              Rule #1 - live like a resident.

Once I hit fatfire numbers I'm going to get a 2020(2022?) Tesla roadster, or a trimotor Cybertruck if I have a bigger garage then

In the context of this thread, I have never owned a "fancy" car. I wanted one the most when I could least afford it, when I was a med student. I owned a trio of used BMWs (3 and 1 Series) over the years, but hardly dream cars. Now that I can afford a six figure automobile, I have no interest. You might find the same.

Yesterday, I was driving around in my 2018 Nissan Leaf marveling how it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Dream is to unload my Rarri for a Toyota or Honda. Around a $3-4M NW when I got it. Now, with several fold that, look at my aspirations!

But if you must experience Porsche exhilaration for yourself, you really want a GT3 RS, or for a few extra bucks, the GT2 RS is the pinnacle of the 911 model.

I'm ordering rock sliders for my truck as soon as I can decide whether I want kick-outs or no kick-outs. After that purchase, the cost of my aftermarket upgrades will be about the cost of the truck. Last trip, in addition to using the standard gear, I was able to repair two tires and reinflate with the onboard air compressor--this could be particularly useful for an intense Costco run. Zero regrets.

                      Does that count as fancy?

If you can afford it, go for it.

Same here, my wife drives a six figure SUV and it physically hurts to bring that thing in for service at the dealership

I drive a manual transmission Honda that is 1/3 the price. I actually look forward to my hour long commute (against traffic) most days

Tesla Model 3 is the fanciest car I have, and I love it. Bought it when I was at -250k NW straight out of fellowship (*dodges tomatoes*). But also have a very high income so could "afford it" even at that time.

Now 2 years later, NW much higher after some lucky/good trades, upgrading to Model S next year.

Because of my cheapness I(therefore we) tried hard not to get a tesla. After our prius we got a plugin accord then a leaf. But my wife kept harping on the range anxiety, so I broke down and we got the Y(49k, 1/2 fancy car?). I must admit, it's quite an engineering feat. Looking back on it, we should have gotten the 3 after the prius and bypassed the plug in and leaf. Live and learn.

My definition of dream cars has changed as I've gotten (relatively) older. It used to be a Lamborghini or McLaren. Now it's more along the lines of any of the late 60s/early 70s muscle cars, 1987 Buick Regal Grand National, mid 1980s Chevy Silverados, etc. I could probably get about 5 of my dream cars for $100k at this point. I need a bigger garage.
