Hi there.  Like many of you I am a practicing doc and I have enjoyed all the financial tips found here at WCI.

Does anyone know of funding sources (ideally grants) to support start-up costs for a small (non-medical) business?  Sure would like to hear people's experiences.

    Thanks,

    Mmd.

Check with your local community college or university. For example. Murray State University, near us, has a Small Business Development Center that provides free services to help entrepreneurs make good decisions when starting a business. If a startup has promise, they will help secure funding and will work with the SBA. The advice is excellent, on par with what my CPA firm would provide for a fee but it's free so I send many startups to them. Hopefully, you'll find something similar nearby.

Another resource is SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, who can mentor you in starting a business that may not be in your primary field. Good luck!
