Might be unpopular to say, but i will say it: Bicycling on roads is a bad idea.

    Distracted drivers. Be careful.

I broke my arm then stopped.
For this reason my biking has been only on the rails to trails paths and not on roads and bike lanes. I see too many cars enter the bike lane without looking or indicating in order to make a right hand turn.

Good point. Head trauma can definitely lead to neuronal destruction/implosion. Ferroptosis is a primary intermediary cellular step if you’re interested.

I’ve had 2 concussions from biking and 1 from MVA. Not fun.

      • San Diego is an exercise and bike friendly town. Yet, it's populated with bunches of distracted bafoon bafoons.

Seen way too many bike accidents where total responsibility is the car. Stay on the trails. At least you have a better chance with the snakes

One of my concussions was veering off track while trying to avoid a snake. My buddy also had his rear tire blown out when a rattlesnake bit his MTB tire. Fortunately it was the tire that got hit and not his leg.

My ebike is very fast and the parking is so much easier with the bike. The valet guys are my buddies (generous tipper, hah!) so they take care of my bike.
Do you have to pay for valet! And what kind of ebike do you have(I’m sure this is going to make me jeaous)? How long have you been bike commuting?

              True.

Still better your bike and head vs hood of car and concrete block.

              • I am trying to figure out of I am doing something wrong. The internet tells me that tires should last 2000-3000 miles. My rear tire is ground down to nothing and I got a flat the other day. My front tire is a little better but not very much. I replaced the tube because I had one handy but It is going to blow as well if I do not replace the tire obviously. But I wanted to figure out if I am doing something wrong because I estimate that I only put 500-600 miles on so far. Is it because I am using a MTB with MTB tires on the road? Am I too fat? Using the break too aggressively?

Even with gas the way it is now this biking cost me more than driving. Neutral at best. But do not get me wrong I enjoy every minute of it so I am doing it for that reason and exercise. But I am not going to kid myself that it is saving money.

Consult a good bike shop. Logic tells me it might be some simple alignment problem. But I am not your bike shop advisor.

                  • I suspect using mountain bike tires on a smooth road surface. More surface contact area = more wear.

You would be better served by changing to a road bike or a hybrid bike with a narrower tire. If you are biking that much to work, investing in a good bike will be worth it. If not for savings, at least as a gym equipment.

I have been on the lookout for something nice. But I am not the type of person to just drop a 4 figure amount on a whim. But now that I know that I am committed and will continue to ride I am willing to invest more time and money into it.

It is ridiculous what some bikes cost!

                      • I am riding my ebike to work this summer. It makes me happy to ride and the weather has been great. My ebike has a 1500 watt engine so it gets me there very quickly.

I am also riding on mountain bike tires on the road. So far, no issues with worn out tires, but I have only been riding for about a month so far.

                          • When I see someone on a motorcycle I think they’re a dumb*** to be out on the road with all the idiot drivers I see daily.

Not sure how riding a bike to work is supposed to be any different.

Not meant as a knock against bicyclers themselves.

Bike lanes help tremendously. In congested areas, it seems like traffic laws matter when convenient. Pass on the left, right or any way to bypass traffic in lanes. Then it’s okay to claim a whole lane. Rolling through stop signs and expect the car you just passed on the right to not make a right hand turn.
Some Dumb*** bikers too. I yield to bikers, they need to yield too. Most do.

                              • I second the advice of consulting LBS(local bike shop, not low back strain/sprain). I had tire wear my first year. After 2 flats, I consulted the shop owner. He recommended that if I’m commuting(not trying to PR), go for the cheaper, thicker, more durable tread.
