Not being able to smell is more of a pain in the rear end than I would have expected. Hopefully this does not last very long but I've heard people complaining about it for up to 6 months. It would really upset me.

My wife finds it interesting and is now testing me every morning seeing if I can smell the various concentrated oils she uses for baking.

I could not tell the difference between cinnamon and peppermint this morning.
I hope you all have a benign course. FWIW, my wife had the loss of smell after getting the monoclonals, it lasted a day. A friend had the loss of smell that lasted a month (i think after moderna vaccine) but other than that only a slight cold. Mt Sinai in NYC had some study with testing/training your sense of smell daily with pungent spices to get it back sooner- coffee, cinnamon, vinegar, which is what she was doing.

Now that I am positive my wife is joking that she is going to isolate me and the 2 year old. But then she remembers there are 3 other kids and it might be a bad deal.

Hope everything turns out ok, I’m sure it will. When we all had covid in December, the worst thing was the boredom from being stuck in the house for 10 days, so hopefully you’ll just have boredom and be out of the house soon!

I am being told by my employer that because there is remote work for me to do I do not qualify for quarantine pay and I can use my PTO (which I have plenty of but is not the point) or work from home doing televisits and cleaning out inboxes. We have a lot of docs out now so there is a ton to do.

So I am sick with covid, stick in a house with 4 kids under 7, and need to remote in and get work done.

Rules in NY are if you are vaccinated you do not need to quarantine so my wife is free to continue working. So I am on my own.

Boredom will not be a problem. Insanity maybe...

Dude, sorry. Wow, they don't sound very sympathetic! That is not very cool. I am sorry. I don't know all the details but stuff like this makes me sad.

When people say: "they won't love you back" I look at stuff like this and it is hard to argue.

I would probably just take your sick days until you feel better.

              Hang in there.

You're sick. Take sick leave. Rest up and take care of the two year old in between the sleep cycles. Hopefully covid won't run through the household over the next week, but you need to rest.

Forget doing work and burn the candle that much more. Use your leave. Physician heal thyself.

I thought that quarantine was used in COVID predominantly for healthy people exposed to COVID so that they not carry it and spread asymptomatically. But then you are symptomatic with a mild case of COVID. You are not quarantining but actually trying to recuperate from the disease. And they expect you to work during this? No wonder people don't love hospitals and its admins.

He has the option of actually being sick and using PTO, that doesn't seem unfair.

Yes I could use my pto. My symptoms are quite mild though and nothing that would prevent me from clacking away on a computer. I have clarified the work that needs to be done and it is rather minimal. So I will put in a effort to keep up with it.

I have a feeling I'm going to be needing to save some PTO for illnesses pertaining to my children in the future. I would rather not burn it now if I do not have to.

I am more just annoyed at the disruption of my life.

Also all of this work I am doing is non-productive and my salary will take a hit in the next cycle. Again it shouldn't make that much of a difference but it is just annoying.

Ugh, sorry, sounds like a pretty unsympathetic employer (like most, unfortunately!). Mine was the same, tried to get me to do TeleMed from home and I refused, so I just took unpaid leave. Pretty crappy though, if I was an hourly employee like basically everyone else who isn’t a physician in our hospital system, I would have gotten paid, but since I’m RVU based production, I got nothing. Like they say, your job won’t love you back! Even though I was basically asymptomatic, I wanted to recover quickly without the stress of work slowing me down.

Hence PTO for RVU based salary = meaningless and primary reason why I hate RVU models in an employer based setting as many factors and benefits of being a W2 is negated and skew to favor of employer.

You're doing uncompensated work unless it's all telework. Go binge watch Loki. Jungle Cruise coming up Friday

Wait, do you get sick leave or not? Say you worsen and have to go inpatient, does that burn PTO?

I'm curious because I've never had a job with sick days or PTO. But I also chuckle to consider the vice president of pencilsharpening being told s/he should be working with COVID.

PTO is all the leave I have. You use it if you're sick on vacation or taking CME time. The only exception is people who are quarantined and unable to work due to covid there is a separate Bank of time that is used for them but it does not apply in my case because I have a job that can be done remotely apparently.

I agree the work I am doing is I'm compensated. However as I said before I might need the PTO in the future if illnesses or restrictions keep my kids out of daycare and I need to take time off of work. And luckily we do have a PTO buy back at the end of the year and I can sell back up to 2 weeks of PTO if I have extra. It is quite a value and I've done it once before but if it was not for that I would be even more pissed off.

Not to mention we had a plan vacation next week which is obviously canceled and we cannot get any of the funds back for. It wasn't a ridiculous vacation but still a couple thousand dollars down the drain.

And I doubt anybody other than possibly you might be able to relate to this but I was very excited to go see the re-release of Star Trek 4 in august. If this messes up my ability to do so I am going to be extremely angry. If you are interested you can join us at the regal theater in Syracuse New York we are going to dinosaur barbecue prior to the film.

The point is I may seem bitter about all of this but I'm really just upset because of how much of a wrench it's thrown into my life over this past week.
