What are your plans for masking in your personal life after you, family and friends have all received the vaccine? Life as we knew it? Still social distancing?

      No masks. Back to normal.

Didn’t Saint Fauci just say that vaccinated individuals don’t need to mask up when together? That’s our plan.

        • Second shot shortage is going to ramp up. The supply being drained in Texas to 3 national guard sites (2 in Dallas and 1 in Houston which are now taking age 60 but not anywhere else) and the HUB sites and the large healthcare institutions. Pharmacies that previously received shipments have no clue. There is no plan (published) to allow the original network to transfer the people due for 2nd shots. This will be frustrating but no plan has been announced. "All comers" for a 2nd shot? Same location?

Shipments of vaccines for second shots are NOT being published.

"In the meantime, the share of people getting their second dose on time has been shrinking — and the gap, which topped 1 million only a week ago, has been growing rapidly, to 2,826,134 people as of February 24."

Two shots is challenging but more so when the supply chain drys up. The logistics just got more difficult.

Since January 20, the Biden-Harris Administration has supported the establishment or expansion of 441 community vaccination centers across 37 states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The Biden-Harris Administration has launched a comprehensive, whole-of-government effort to get more people vaccinated—by increasing vaccine supply, increasing vaccinators, and increasing the number of places to get vaccinated. As…

The push seems to be FEMA and National Guard to the rescue. Issuing vaccines that were targeted for different locations. The states have no choice but to get every shot they can and make happy. CVS has had limited supply last week. All booked up (except Amarillo) and Walgreens had not started. So much for more supply added which was absent in the original rollout. More supply diverted.

Citizens don't care where they get vaccinated (other than the traffic jams at the mass sites), As long as there if no published schedule of when and where to get vaccinated, the public will be frustrated. There is a supply estimate and no plan laid out other than the "new plan". Over capacity for vaccinating and the lag has disappeared (75% today). We gained 2.8 million with primarily the existing capacity and more capacity coming online. Much of the idle capacity is due to the change in distribution to the federal government.

The 100m shots will be achieved next week. Basically 35 days. Success! Now we have a new set of problems, vaccine 2. The pilot said to change course, but the plan for vaccine 2 is still being figured out and keep from view. The requirement for shot #2 for inventory planning purposes has created another issue.

Anecdotally, last week 3 people in California in San Diego (props to StarTrekDoc) received shot # only 1 day late! This will work out. Just a different flight plan.
I feel sorry for the folks that put in the effort previously to set up vaccination sites and that the second shots have been delayed.

Makes for good PR I guess. Hopefully the J&J will help. It will have PR problems.
"Johnson & Johnson's vaccine may appear to have a lower efficacy rate than its earlier counterparts. But that does not make it a worse option because it appears to protect against some variants, another member of the committee to recommend the vaccine said."bab
Pluses and minuses. Something is better than nothing will probably be the choice.

Since many children will not be vaccinated for some time, not quite normal for us. We will probably attend concerts and performances and such but only if masking is enforced. I am sure as a HCW we will all be wearing masks indefinitely.

Give it time. He’s got an unfortunate history of saying different things on different days.

We just went to a birthday party of a friend where 11 adults were there. All had the full 2 doses and at least one week after the 2nd dose.

                None wore masks.

There were 2 kids 3 and 1, obviously unvaccinated. The parents did not put on a mask on either of them.

                • Well our system kind of tired of being on the short end of the supply stick and shut down our super site for 4 days without any guarantee from county or state to sustain and trying to put a brave face on folk being bumped twice for their 2nd shot.

We feared this exact issue would come with the second round of shots and it's playing out as feared unfortunately.

J+J will improve the shot anxiety of this and really improve the outreach push for vaccine hesitancy.

This 2nd shot hunting will only benefit the folk with the resources to find them.

                  • My brother who probably hasn’t had any shots since he was a kid says he is “done with vaccines” after he got sick with his second Moderna shot. I encouraged him to consider the J&J vax next year but it sounds like it ain’t gonna happen. One of my friends (a social worker) also didn’t bother to get a second Pfizer shot after she got sick with the first one.

I hope there aren’t too many people like this in society at large, or we’re going to be up a creek when vaccine-resistant variants become predominant or it’s time for a new round of boosters.

                    • So far my older patients have been overwhelmingly OK with getting the vaccine. If they are hesitant I am glad to be able to tell them I got it myself and I believe in it. This is a situation where it's really helpful to have a long term working relationship with patients. I tell them up front the vaccine can make them feel sick for a day or two, especially the second one, and I have not had one refuse because of it. There are a couple patients that have declined but they are the types that don't like medications, vaccines or doctors..

I think it will be a tougher sell with younger healthy patients who will rightly point out that their risk is lower. I would like to be able to take a positive optimistic approach with them (which I think is warranted) but with mixed messages coming out from the media and government throughout the pandemic I think there is still a high level of distrust.

doesn't that mean she has previous exposure to the virus? I think they will recommend just one dose for those who've previously had covid since the immune response is very strong.

                          Hadn’t been diagnosed.

a doctor I work with also got pretty sick after first dose of Moderna but still came back for the second. The clinical director actually came down with it a few days after getting the first shot and still completed the full course.

                          • In my family, the most significant reaction was to the youngest person, the physician. It greatly helped having advance notice.
12 hrs might be reaction starting and at most it lasts 24 hrs from then. Maybe not exactly accurate but pretty close. Everyone looked for the 12 hr mark and only 2 had any reaction. Actually comforting for everyone knowing it would pass shortly. Suggest sharing experience (2 out of 8) seemed to calm a lot of nerves. One night of temp or chills is tons better than the actual covid.
