      • Testing? Vaccine are where the money is going. Investing in testing right now would be like investing in an oil company. They are making money now, but their future is questionable. I think/hope that testing will drop off precipitously if the vaccines provide herd immunity and there are only isolated outbreaks.
The imminent authorization of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine in the United States is a momentous occasion for science, the economy and humanity. The milestone is also a major moneymaker for the companies that developed the vaccines.

I don't know about going to Hawaii in March. I have booked 2 out of state trips in the next three months with the hope that a lot of these travel restrictions will be amended for vaccination status. I don't know if it is going to happen though. I've read stories about people being arrested in Hawaii for breaking quarantine so I certainly wouldn't try to break their rules. I'm sure that they would have no problems trying to make an example out of a physician who was not obeying the rules. The problem with these testing rules is that if Thanksgiving and Christmas were any predictors, there will be a surge in testing during the few days prior to school vacation weeks and it will be hard to get tested and have results in hand for whatever the states will require at that time.

Is your wife vaccinated? Daughter? Just curious how people are making decisions to fly again. I'm hoping my husband will be vaccinated in the next few months but with a 4 yo . . . It feels like we'll never be able to fly again as a family. Of course maybe this is as good a reason as any to do Hawaii without kids ;-)

None of them will be vaccinated by then besides me. We were good with that and the preflight testing to lower the risk and minimal contact while in Hawaii .

            • Spring Break or Summer Vacation? To my simple mind, cabin fever and the end of harsh winters in San Diego might be worth a 3 month delay. April, May and June will be out of sight on the vaccination side.

The unknown is the wife and daughter and how serious an infection might be.

I know it well. Offered daughter the choice of trip anywhere in the world. Her choice, either mom or me. The difference is, all vaccinated (I hope),
Stiil 5% chance, but these restrictions are seriously impacting life.

Not judgmental. Enjoy your trip whenever.

              • Does anyone understand “the 25 executive orders of which almost half are Covid related”
Orders are signed and set in a pile.
100m In 100 days is the goal and rejoined WHO is the only messaging or discussion.

I don’t see a plan or strategy. Maybe I am incorrect, I was under the impression that closer to 200m would be available.
Is the strategy changing or what part of the process is being improved?
Seems foggy so far. Paper pushing and bureaucracy. Maybe I am wrong.

Have to be careful not to get too political, but I also don't understand the plan at the federal level. And I know it's a new administration but hopefully they didn't just start thinking about this 2 days ago. I know the Defense Authorization Act has been talked about, but according to the NYT it won't make much difference since the vaccine is already being produced as fast as possible. To me the main role of the federal government would be to insure the vaccine gets from the manufacturers to the states ASAP, and that ought to be pretty straightforward.

My view would be the success of the program is dependent on what happens at the state and local levels, and too much federal involvement may actually slow things down. If you look at the successes talked about above, they are mainly coming from locals identifying their resources then making good use of them (hopefully I'm not sounding too much like an administrator).

I think the risk while flying can be mitigated. The problem with vacationing while unvaccinated in my mind is more one of the actual vacation—it is harder to stay away from people in general while you are vacationing, more eating out, more tourist activities—you show up at an activity that you thought would be safe but it’s a bit crowded—kids are excited, you won’t be back here until who knows when—easy to tell yourself it’s probably fine—do you risk it or go back to the hotel room?

For mitigating the flying risk, do you mean just wearing a mask, not eating or drinking and washing hands or is there more? We don't actually have any vacations planned because as you pointed out- what would we do? I would not be comfortable in a crowded place, even if we were outdoors.

Pretty sure you mean the Defense Production Act rather than the annual National Defense Authorization Act.

We recently flew for the first time as a family during the pandemic. Husband and I are vaccinated, kids are not. We all 5 wore Vogmasks + face shields. Sat in the back row of the plane. No eating/drinking en route. Obviously plenty of handwashing/sanitizing. Obviously not a perfect solution, but we felt relatively comfortable. YMMV.

Mask (n95 with fit testing), face shield, don’t eat/drink, copious hand washing/sanitizer, stay away from people in airport, get upgraded to business class if you can . I have traveled once by plane (well, twice, round trip) out of necessity and the actual plane trip was fine. But the nature of the trip was not for vacation. Most of the things I normally like to do on vacation would probably not feel all that fun right now if I were with non-vaccinated family—I would just worry about them or about spreading it to others.

                              • First flight out of the day. Beach destination. Chill outside in warm waters (aka not San Diego water!).

-Biggest risk will be the airport transit at SD IMHO. That risk won't be any different Mar vs Jun 2021. Not until end of the year where most vaccinated (hopefully).

Production act will do one thing -- sourcing raw materials and conversion of existing infrastructure.

No diversion to other production means. Pfizer and Moderna gets everything it needs to make more.
Convert any existing Non-pfizer/Non-moderna manufacturing capabilities and nationalize them toward that effort.

Think WWII -- iron in short supply -- all diverted to war effort. GM/Ford/Chrysler - all converted manufacturing to war production.

Edit -- good thing is the highest at risk folk in the family (grandparents) are vaccinated. The two kids 20 and 18 aren't - but ironically travelling with family to Hawaii will be lower risk than their current exposure risks at home situation.
