If I am willing to put up with the hassle, I can return the car until I get one that is as close as possible to perfect. There are checklists for all the defects, too.

So 35K Tesla (“standard”) model is here. Does this change anyone’s calculus?
It's close. We want a wagon, not a sedan, so it's still a hard no. (dog, ski's, bikes, don't fit inside).
35k is getting to a really vialble price point for many folks. I'm excited to see the market continue to change.
We love the EV we have, and not going to a gas station is amazing. What horrible dirty places. I get home, plug in the car, and done. So obvious it's a better solution (at least for us).Comment

We enjoyed the days of our cheap leases - Fiat 500e and Spark EV. Both were a lot of fun and essentially paid to drive those commuter cars.
We've had the Model 3 for nearly a year now and 21,000 miles later - still rocking it without any Fit/Finish issues. Time will tell on whether it's going to match up with our 2004 Odyssey beater that's still hanging around.
We're still in the market for the replacement for our CR-V and have been anticipating the Niro EV as it; but we may actually hold out for the Y if that's going to announce for 2020.
The key issue on EV is your typical daily/monthly range. We take our Model 3 up to LA downtown routinely from San Diego and back without recharge and still roll in with 40+ miles left. That wouldn't happen on the standard range -- so really know your needs with all the options that they have now on the batteries.
I use the Autopilot-steer/Autonav nearly close to 90% of the time on the freeways now. It's so nice. And I'm a roady person too -- loved driving my old G37 around, but sadly she's not getting the love anymore on the weekends.Comment

I've had my model 3 just under 6 months and 14,000 miles. (It has replaced my wifes Explorer for all road trips...Autopilot is amazing, and the cost of travel is 75% less.)
The paint is great. No panel gaps to speak of, though I cannot say I ever really looked on any other car I've owned. I've had a couple of slight trim rattles, but Tesla has sent a tech to my office parking lot and fixed it while I was making money inside. One issue that I had to drive to the service center for. They did lose some points for crappy communication during that, but they did provide me with a $125,000 loaner Model X with ludacris mode. HOLY CRAP that was fun. I think I sold a couple of Teslas terrorizing the elementary school parking lot one Friday night with some neighbors.
Far and away the best car I've ever had. Road trips slightly slower with charging, and occasionally inconvenient (Charlotte's charger is on the far side of the city, and I don't travel there on the interstate). Other than that, I haven't been to a gas station except to pee in 6 months. The car is just simply fun, and just simply works. Tesla is doing to our other cars what the iPhone did to Nokia.
WRT the Tesla killers, unfortunately (and I mean that) the other manufacturers are so far behind Tesla on tech that it isn't even funny. The Jaguar iPace Volvo Polestar 2 both require about 30% more electricity per mile than Tesla, which unfortunately plays right into the electric vehicle critics. I wouldn't take either on a road trip until they either fix the range or build out a high speed charging network. This quote yesterday from VW chairman is telling.

The large manufacturers are somewhat slaves to their legacy. It's a lot like Amazon vs. Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart had too much to lose to adapt, and became #2. Don't count them out yet, but they gave up the advantage. Same goes for VAG.
Edit: The Rivian truck looks like a bad mamma jamma. I'd drive the crap out of that. I'm looking forward to seeing what they actually sell vs what they can show as a concept. (See Porsche Taycan for how pedestrian production vehicles can become compared to their concepts.) Tesla could be selling a truck as early as next year.Comment

I own 2 Teslas. I got the first one back at the end of 2012. Now in my 7th year of ownership, the car is almost as good as new. Unfortunately though, my first Tesla has no autopilot. The battery has around 90% of the original range. There is virtually no maintenance cost. It appears this vehicle will likely last me 20 years without worry.
And once the cost of the solar panels is fully amortized, the annual marginal cost of the vehicle is getting pretty darn close to nothing. Just think if this were happening with a Model 3 for 35k upfront cost. Seems like a no brainer if the vehicle meets your transportation needs.
The one thing I hate, the tires do need replacement... just like on a regular car. I wish Tesla would come up with a solution for that pesky issue.Comment

Twice as much to go wrong. All the maintenance of an ICE car with half the benefits. Gas is better for road trips. Battery is better for every other mile driven, at 1/4 to 1/10th the cost. Unfortunately, nothing comparable in size to a 450h right now, so it's not a bad choice in that class.Comment

Maybe the smaller Tesla SUV? A lot less costly? The Model Y has a big reveal next week. The consensus is for the base model to come in at less than $40k.
However, you never know how long you will need to wait for delivery....Comment
