  • Time efficiency - what does everyone here do?

So now that I'll be getting out of residency lala land in t-6 months I am becoming acutely aware of passing time and becoming old (well during residency you are just busy surviving ... sort of with other things mixed in).

After an 8-10 hour work day lets say you come home at 6 p.m. Eating and work out ~ 2 hours. Then play with kids/homework/activity/lesson of the day (start saving 20% income now kid!) etc 0.5 hours-0.75 hours. Chat with S.O. 0.25 hours. Now before 12 you got only 3 hours. If not already dead tired/brain dead I think this is the critical time where one can really take life in hyper drive: side gig, reading a bunch, learn a new skill...watch college football? You get the idea.

How is everyone structuring their hours here for max output or is it max entertainment. I am mostly interested in the book-o-holics and their adventures, as I really want to get more reading in but am failing to do so on the regular. Very slow reader and never great but I want to become better.

    Thank you for any insight.

You wake up earlier than everyone and do the important stuff in the morning while everyone is asleep. Read, workout, get stuff done in am. Very hard otherwise, at least for me. I always struggle with afternoon working out because Im simultaneously hungry and it always wins and then cant work out and its too late (riding my bike really).

I like to read early in the morning. I get up between 4-5AM.  I have time to read and exercise prior to work

          6:45 = wake

          7-8 = commute (I know, I know, move closer)

          8-5 = work

          5-6 = commute

          6-7 = family time

          7-8 = dinner

8-9 = review day's financials, finish notes, mess around on computer

9-10 = workou...oh who am i kidding, collapse on sofa

10 = lights out, do it all over again

          I've gotten soft with age

Cutting down to 4 days/week soon so hopefully it gives me time to cultivate some other interests. And maybe hit the gym and not lapse on my new year's resolution in month #1

I am a total morning person now even though residency couldnt make me one, but I love my coffee and peaceful time. That means 545-6 waking up, coffee time, quick workout, then checking on financials/market, fooling around on the web, etc...Hope to add in more structured time for writing this year so I accomplish something more meaningful. I dont start work until 9, unless its an OR day where I arrive at 8, and my commute is 10 minutes.  Mornings are like my meditation and relaxation time.

I'm resisting waking up early but will likely need to. I, too, like some quiet time with coffee (coffee in to go cup just isn't the same in the car). Working out in the AM, not sure I am there yet .

I am usually up by 5:30 (6:30 on weekends) and exercise in the morning, 6 days per week. The morning is the only time that no one will bother me-- not the hospital, not the family, not the dogs. You will find that as you get older, it gets easier to wake early (and more difficult to stay awake later).

Just for the sake of demonstrating a diversity of strategies:

10 AM wake up, coffee, write three pages stream of consciousness, small breakfast, check websites and news

11:15 leave for work unless it's Wednesday or weekend, in which case bike, weights  and trail running

8:30 PM Home, dinner, family time

10:30 Quiet, everyone asleep, read books, write, maybe watch some sports, communicate with friends. Read 50-75 books per year, including car audiobooks

                    2 AM to sleep

night owl, mornings not my thing

Wow you guys make me realize I'm totally lazy with all the working out I dont do!. My days are so random I cant even begin to summarize them here. But I usually start my days drinking Kona coffee (obsessed after my last trip to the big island) and playing Starcraft 2 4v4 (nerdy but awesome computer game). If I'm well rested I walk my dog in the afternoon. I play piano and sometimes my ukulele. Been meaning to start getting back into guitar lately but haven't gotten there yet. Some days if Im really feeling motivated I find something to work on around the house. Owning an old house (built 1885) requires fairly constant work. Which I enjoy. But its never done. Always more to do. I have backyard chickens that need tending to. Hang out with my wife. She likes to go over to her parents farm and ride horses. I dont usually do that with her though. I just watch. I used to ride my bike a lot around the city but its been a stressful year and hasnt been happening lately. Plus the weather sucks now. Life as a hospitalist provides for odd hours and lots of days off. My new job will be a regular 9-5 type schedule so things are going to be quite different for me later this year. I need to start working out regularly too.
