Partner wants to buy a Super Car worth 150k

I used to feel the same way but there is a lot more to these cars than performance per dollar. All modern performance cars are now rockets, especially for street use where they are complete overkill. It’s the intangibles and subtleties in driving experience that make the difference including how it feels when driving at less than full bore, else everyone would be selling their 458, R8, 911 turbo/GT3, NSX etc for a corvette, which is a performance king dollar for dollar. Also boring to see 10 examples of your car on the way to work which is where people will pay for the exclusivity as well. Corvettes are a ************************ of a value and great cars though.

That doesn't sound like a car enthusiast so much as it sounds like someone who just likes to spend a lot of money.  That may not be a problem if he earns enough and saves enough - but that is a very big "if."

Two different markets. Guy who is going to buy a lambo probably isn't going to buy a 60k vette. Maybe a z06 or zr1 but still different.

If your goal is performance then a new vette plus tweaks will be better bang for buck than any exotic. By same token you can put a bunch of money into an old rx7 or whatver and crush a new vette for less money. New vette is pretty ideal performance and coolness without being stupid expensive.

Vette is pretty much perfect for its market and has the sales to signify such.

You buy a lambo suv bc you have money to burn and want people to know it. Literally the only reason and thats not who the vette is going after.

LOL, Fatlittlepig will never be the "exclusive" expensive car club, but the members of that club will likely never be in the exclusive Fatlittlepig club (membership requires a paid off house and 50x expenses in retirement savings.)

No, I think it will actually sell more due to low cost. But it's not for the discerning niche with discretionary resources that wants exotics. Buy definition high volume sales make it not an exotic. The corvette has always had the reputation of poor interior design too, hope that changes if they want to get serious about competing in the top tier.

Put another way, the people that buy the Lamborghini or Bentley SUV do so at a major premium instead of a Mercedes or BMW SUV because of the exclusivity.

A lot of people also look at value.

 

The new Corvette looks to be a tremendous value if you are looking for a high performance car.

i'm not sure what you are saying.  you are predicting it won't sell well?

i understand some people buy performance and wouldn't consider it on basis of availability certainly.

you think it will have less volume in sales than 911?  than nsx?  you think it will sell less than traditional front engine corvette?

The new Corvette is going to make a lot of car folks reconsider their options.

It should have near super car performance for a fraction of super car price.

I'll chime in since I bought a 150K entry level supercar last year.

While I could have paid cash, my approach was putting down enough cash that I will never be "upside down" on it and I do extra shifts each month to make the payment. If I ever reach the point where I decide the amount of extra work required to keep it isn't worth it (not likely), I'll get rid of it. No harm, no foul as it was all play money anyways.

I notice that some are quick to judge but it's hard to understand the draw if you are not a car guy. Car guys don't do it for the luxury or prestige but because they appreciate the engineering, technology, and most importantly the way it drives, even when not thrashing it around a racetrack.

Another misconception is that a person that buys such vehicles makes poor financial decisions. While it is an expensive hobby, as long as your are putting away a 1/3 of your income for investments, I don't see the issue with it. Isn't that the reason we work? Or is the goal to stop working in less than 10 years after spending 26 years in school/residency getting the degree.

I give your partner the go ahead. You live only once. These cars are far enjoyable in my early to mid thirties than when you are 50+ and can barely get in and out.

An added perk is the car community. I've met so many new and interesting friends thru car events in the past year. You also quickly learn that doctors are the small fish when you get to the 150K+ range.

That version does seem underwhelming (425 hp?), but you have to admit the newer stylings are pretty great, and the price is amazing. Some of the z51 versions are in the 700+HP range, wonder how much it will cost then. Still a year or so old vette is an incredibly reasonable deal.

Am lucky to have a friend that loves cars and he has probably had 10+ since we graduated, and we've done a high performance driving course as well. Really fun. Even if you're not personally into it, its easy to appreciate it.
