Hahnemann hospital situation

The university hospital is shutting down.
It is unsettling, i have heard of non teaching hospitals closing, but for hospital with this many services and long history its not good. At what point did it make sense for the administrators to pull the plug and loose such important place where lots of physicians are trained for the city?

Anyone know what is happening to jobs of attendings there?
Residents seems to be in bad situation.

There have been several teaching hospitals completely shut down, but i have never heard of any such abruptly. When Fitzsimmons closed its doors 1996 in Denver, I believe it was announced in 1993/1994 of the closure so people could plan accordingly. There were nearly 3000 jobs lost, along with 20 GME programs.  it was something like 800K lost clinic visits per year and 110K inpatient bed days.  That was quite a hit to the Denver area at the time..... people forget.......  However the military placed all the residents and military physicians...all the civilian staff and physicians were just left to find new jobs on their own but they had lots of time to plan.

The abruptness of this closure is really what is most unsettling.

The other big hospitals in the city (Jefferson, Penn, Temple) already said they will absorb the residents. Hahnemann has been in a bad financial predicament for years, since before the Tenet acquisition, this is not a sudden outcome. Don't know the reasons (probably multifactorial) but heard that they were losing millions a month just in unreimbursed ED/trauma services. Plus there are 5 medical schools within a 5 mile radius there with lots of hospitals, competition is fierce. It would be interesting to see what happens to their non-govt 457b plans (not positive they had them in the first place).

Yeah, I am sure the residents and nurses will quickly be absorbed by the other Philly hospitals, but what about all of those unemployed administrators? Who is looking out for them?

This isn't an abrupt situation just like most situations similar to this. It's unfortunate and incredibly inconvenient for the residents but they'll all find another spot.

I'm sure they'll create a job for them. Chief Experience Officer, Chief Visionary Officer, Chief Inspiration Officer, etc.

Thank goodness! It will save me from starting a kickstarter fund or panhandling to support them.

Anyone who is in healthcare administration has known that the hospital has been in trouble for a while.  Honestly, we expected it to close last year.

Strangely though they solicited and matched for PGY1 positions...if they knew this was coming taking in new residents starting 01 July with a 01 Sept close date (or whatever it is...).....was pretty crummy.  obviously this was pretty hush otherwise why would anyone want to put it on their rank list with no idea what will happen to them once the doors close.....

i guess one could argue this way they secured the CMS funding per each resident which would travel with the resident to the new placement...but funding is only one issue with GME slots..there has to be enough patient/cases and space and appropriate faculty supervision. Resident/fellow complements per program are set by ACGME to ensure the training is adequate (enough cases to go around) and safe (enough faculty for appropriate supervision for the size of the program)...throwing a bunch of extra residents into a program may be commendable for the program accepting them but this assumes it doesn't compromise the learners who are already there.....which is hard to know until they are there..... some of these issues may be offset though by the workload (and other faculty) from Hahnemann coming to the surrounding hospitals.    Program directors and DIOs though lost their positions....
