Sorry for the dumb question, when you are doing TLH, do you have to “sell” the fund and then buy another, or can you just do an “exchange”?

Good question — as the others said, just exchange. One of the benefits of owning mutual funds — is it even an option with ETFs? Not a rhetorical question; I don’t own any ETFs.

No, you have to sell, then buy a replacement.

While this is an advantage of mutual funds, one advantage ETF's have for someone harvesting aggressively is the ability to catch intraday prices.

Thank you. I thought that was the case, but didn't want to make a false statement.

I have two asset classes in my Vanguard taxable account: US Stock and International Stock. However, after taking advantage of various TLH opportunities, I have 5 mutual funds in the account: Total Stock Market, S&P 500, Total International, All-World, Ex-US, and Developed Markets

why do you have 3 international funds?  Isn't 2 sufficient for TLH?

edit: is it because you did TLH twice in a month?

          Bingo!

VLCAX is a decent 3rd partner for US Stocks, too (I use VTSAX / VFIAX).
