How to form PLLC

Hello! I'm a practicing physician in Texas and would like to form a PLLC. There are plenty of options on forming one online (legalzoom, etc) but I only see LLC and not PLLC. Am I suppose to make an LLC first?

You need a lawyer to form one since you know nothing about one and it has to pass muster with the licensing board. No time to be scrimping with your future.

In Texas, a PLLC is just an LLC formed for specific professions. My understanding is that, as long as you have “PLLC” in the name (abbreviated or spelled out), your LLC will, by default, be a PLLC. No real magic to it. Nolo.com is a great resource for simple legal issues (which this is).

I would question the purpose for forming the PLLC - how will it benefit you? Unless you have employees, I don’t understand why you would want to operate as one.

I agree you should figure out why you think you need a PLLC. It mostly adds expenses for you (registered agent, filing fees, TX franchise tax etc.) while doing little to protect you from a liability perspective.

PLLCs are the type of entities you will find difficult to form via a "legal zoom" type service, given the regulation surrounding them. But if you genuinely do want to form one, the Nolo link above is helpful as is this from TXSOS for the charter: https://www.sos.state.tx.us/corp/forms/206_boc.pdf

I found it relatively straight forward to form my PLLC with the form linked by mcraepat9. Filled it out and mailed in a check so I didn't have to pay the online credit card fee. Had a couple calls with someone at the SOS office that was actually super helpful and I did find an awesome attorney that worked with me on other things and answered quick questions or made sure I was doing things that right way.
