  • Upcoming year - half in Texas, half in California

I'll be starting fellowship in the second half of 2022 in California. The first half of 2022 will be in Texas. Does anyone know if one would have to file state income taxes in California in this situation if I technically spend less than half of the year in California?

Try to spend 183 days or more in Texas if at all possible.

California will want their share of California earnings regardless of how much time you spend in the state. Earned in California, taxed by California.

Have you never moved out of state? If you have earned income in a tax year in 2 different states you'll have to file tax returns for both states. It doesn't matter how many days you're in a state like CA, they will still want their % share.
