  • dumb tax question for refinanced student loans

I refi'd before the student loan interest break. oh well.

1098-e from govmt loan financer shows I paid 20k in interest, but this obviously was laurel road's money.

I assume that I should not include this on my tax return as if I had paid the interest?

Correct. It was paid on your behalf by the refinancer, but not by you.

I actually think it counts because it's getting rolled into principal.

As evidenced by the conflicting viewpoints, not a dumb question after all. I vaguely remember discussing this question with my accountant but turns out it didn’t matter because I made above the limit for it to be deductible.

I tried to Google it and all I could come up with was this: https://www.doctoredmoney.org/blog/2...erestdeduction which seems to indicate that you can deduct up to $2500 of that interest, if you qualify.
