  • Benefits of REPAYE for resident with income earning spouse

    (cross posted from comments)

I’m still indecisive about what to do with my loan program. I have about $180,000 in student loans (5.5-6.8%). I have a spouse that makes $110,000 per year. My REPAYE calculator estimates have my payments at about $1000 per month. IBR would put my payments (filing separately) $0-450. The decision is tough because with REPAYE i get the interest rate break, but have to make the 1k payments, which is somewhat doable.

Based off of my salaray 52k. I take home about ~35k after taxes.
    35k-17.5k (403b)- 5k (roth IRA) – 12k (Loan payments) = 500

Which doesn’t leave much for disability or life insurance. Granted this only takes into account my salary. I still need to run numbers on budgeting and her investment portfolio. Any advice on REPAYE vs. IBR vs. consolidating?
