  • PSLF Employer Certification Problem

    Hi Everyone,

I spoke with a rep at PSLF earlier today and she made it seem like maybe my issue is common so I thought I'd reach out for advice.

I'm in PSLF and have been for several years, working at 501c3 hospitals. I am now considering a new job, working in another hospital that is a 501c3. The rub is, I'd be employed by a private group who staff the emergency department and the private group is not 501c3 nor are they "not for profit." In reading the fine print of the qualifications for employer certification, it appears employers who provide "emergency management" or "public health" do qualify, BUT they must be 501c3 or "not for profit".

Are there other options out there anyone has had success with? I'm considering asking my employer if I can somehow be classified as an employee of the hospital instead, but I think that's unlikely to be successful.

It's just maddening as I'll literally be doing the exact same work in the exact same emergency department but since there is a staffing group between me and the hospital, it appears I'm disqualified. Any advice is appreciated and keep fighting the good fight folks!

You won't qualify based on that information

How many years do you have towards pslf? And why change jobs now if pslf is your goal?

The hospital isn't going to employ you. There aren't a lot of non-profit emergency medicine jobs out there compared to the rest.

There's a decently long running chain I believe of others in somewhat similar situation - https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/fo...alify-for-pslf

My understanding is there are people out there working through the legal system to answer this in finality, but I gotta say that if your employer is non-profit, that pretty clearly answers the question for me.

But I think that’s the problem- his employer isn’t a non-profit. His employer is a for-profit contractor who is contracted by the hospital. I understand the frustration of not being eligible for PSLF while doing literally the same job as if you were employed by the hospital but it seems pretty clear cut that he wouldn’t qualify.
