Throughout my training, my parents have offered several times to help pay off my student loans and I can pay them off slowly later without interest rate. I never take up their offer. My wife told me I'm stubborn but I have learned early on that money from my parents may come with strings attached, usually emotional more than financial and I'm fiercely protective of my independence. Nowadays, I can see myself taking on a loan from my parents as I can pay them a decent interest rate, but I see this as a helping out my parents financially in retirement since they don't really know how to invest their money. So depending on the timing and circumstances, one should consider both the financial and emotional impact of bedding money with family since it's naive to think that they can be separated when dealing with family.
