Series EE bonds, loans, and taxes

I have some series EE bonds purchased in the early 90s and late 90s. They are in my name and I am not a co-owner. Some are earning just over 1%, others are at 4%.

Before I give up on the thought, I just want to confirm that there is no way to avoid paying taxes on the interest. I have student loans from medical school. I am still a resident and could probably come up with some educational expenses. But from what I have read I am pretty much out of luck as student loan payments and expenses during residency are not qualifying educational expenses.

Is there anything I am missing?
