  • Question re: spousal 8606 for Tax Year 2018

Wife did not contribute to tIRA or rIRA for 2018. Does she still fill out a 8606 as the WCI tutorial says? We file jointly.

(BTW, she will this year and from now on as long as I am employed)

the tutorial says to fill our an 8606 if you contributed to a nondeductible tIRA and converted to a rIRA.

    so no, she did neither.

    IRA are Individual.

why didnt you do an IRA for your wife?

11 days and counting.  Get her TIRA-->Roth done.  And file an 8606 for her when it's done.  This can be filed separately to the IRS.

No good reason. Just trying to make it as simple as possible for my accountant (see my other posts) until I get him re-educated. I certainly will for 2019.

The official IRS form 8606 says that spouse also has to submit a 8606. So I guess would be all zeros for her on the form??

There is no reason why you shouldn't/can't do this for her for 2018.  It takes 1 min to fill out an 8606 for a contribution only.  It doesn't complicate anything.  Provided you have $5,500 to contribute you are wasting an opportunity.  Your wife doesn't need a 8606 unless she has something to account for.
