  • Fund choices for new 401k/PSP

Our group is retooling an old 401k/PSP and looking at new fund choices.  If you could design your own plan and pick fund choices, what would you include? Anything you would change from below?

Switch to Vanguard for the target date funds? Add Emerging Markets? Any managed funds you would add (ie Wellington/Windsor)?

    Current choices:

    VBTLX Total Bond

    VIPSX TIPS

    VIMAX Mid Cap

    VSMAX Small Cap

    VTSAX Total Stock

    VTIAX Total International

    VGSLX REIT

    American Funds Target Date Series

The usual smattering of actively managed funds.

Without commenting on specific fund choices, 6-way split as follows:

    SC value

    SC growth

    LCV

    LCG

    REIT

    Int'l

Rebalance annually. Never invest any money you'll need within the next 5 years.

You've easily got better choices than most retirement plans.  You see lots of crummy, expensive funds when people post their only options on Bogleheads.  You can do a 3 fund / 4 fund portfolio with what you've got, plus a little slicing and dicing.

Some might want value / small value funds, or an intermediate bond fund.  And of course, all other things being equal, the Vanguard Target Date Funds will be better for the investor compared to the American Funds versions by virtue of much lower expenses.

      Another caucasian, Gary.
