  • Newbie question for my first 401k

I am a new attending and am setting up my first 401k through my employer, who uses Fidelity. I realize financial education is super important and I am doing my best to learn the basics from this site and the Bogleheads wiki, but still feel way over my head. I like simplicity and would highly prefer if I can pick an allocation now and not have to think about this for a long time. I take it that the Fidelity target date funds are not a good choice despite the simplicity, so I am looking at a three fund portfolio.

However, my problem is that the recommended funds that I read about (usually Vanguard) are not offered by Fidelity. I have read that VTSMX can be approximated by 80% VIIIX and 20% VEMPX.

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX) = 80% VIIIX and 20% VEMPX

Is VTMNX my version of Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VGTSX)?

Is VBTIX my version of Vanguard Total Bond Market Fund (VBMFX)?

So if I want a 50/30/20 allocation (is that appropriate for me btw?) would I go with 40 VIIIX / 10 VEMPX / 30 VTMNX / 20 VBTIX?

Some info about me: early 30s, have about $100k in student loans to pay off, single, no kids, expect to take care of my parents for their retirement. Many thanks in advance!

Looks great to me. Your weighted average Expense Ratio will be under 0.05, I believe. Outstanding.

When you start additional investment accounts (perhaps 457(b), taxable), you'll want to apply the 50 / 30 / 20 across all accounts, but there's no need to worry about that just yet. You can always buy / sell / exchange within the 401(k) at will with no tax consequences.
