  • extra free time

I recently transitioned to a new practice, several years as an attending, starting to see new patients around 1-4 patients a day so I have a ton of free time during the clinic day. Used to seeing 15-20 pts/day so quickly getting bored. Read most of my journals, caught up with WCI information, made my rounds to the referral sources.

Thinking this may be an ideal time to start a side hustle, never had the time or energy to focus on something else---deciding between starting a blog/youtube channel in my subject of expertise vs. photography portrait business (has been a hobby for family before) vs. purchasing first RE rental property preferably as direct owner. Which avenue would you recommend pursuing, goal is some degree of monetary benefit and given I am expecting my first child at the end of the year I know the free time won't last!

Sounds like your practice will grow organically whether you do more grass roots marketing or not. However, if you were to choose to market your practice this would fill some of your time and fulfill your monetary interest ……likely many times over. While having a side hustle may be great, it could become a distraction with a new child….

Just a thought, how will 1-4 patients support your compensation in your new practice? Most physicians need to actually earn their keep or need a new job. Just saying, build, build, build or your primary income might vanish.

I joined a gym and used to go to the gym when I had large gaps in schedule.

            Many hospitals/admins in today’s world don’t care.

Mine would much rather have me not do a thing than be cranking/busy. Easier for staff, admin, less patient/staff complaints.

to the OP, I would just ride it out. Take a daily walk around the parking lot. Watch a movie a day. Learn a new language.. Just enjoy the inefficiencies of corporate healthcare if that’s the world you find yourself in.

It probably won't last as long as you think. But we opened a new ED for our group back in 2015 or 2016. Slow shifts for a year or two definitely helped build WCI.

You really need to ask yourself what you want to do with your life though. This is less about what we recommend than what you want.

Your pessimistic view is always unfortunately spot on. I am starting to wonder if we work at the same place...

You are correct, I am employed by a very large corporation with over 25k employees, I have yet to even meet the admin ha! I feel the same way they really don't have an interest in your own practice development, the inefficiencies are real! But I know within 6 months I will fill up quickly because there is just not enough of the same specialty in the area.

                  Thanks for the input
