pediatric hospitalist

Hi all,

Have been reading the forum for a while and have learned a lot from all of you.

I'm planning to become a pediatric hospitalist. I was wondering if anybody has any information on pediatric hospitalist salaries including in the NYC area. As a current resident, it's a bit difficult to find out this information and want to be better informed when interviewing/negotiating for attending jobs. I've tried looking on the internet, but the data seems scant (and although I don't currently have access, it's unclear to me if MGMA separates out pediatric hospitalist or not).

MGMA does have a category for Pediatrics-Hospitalist. REGIONAL breakdown for Eastern. Please note that the data is only regional. That will include upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and others. The point is the NYC area from my understanding is not an average market and where it is public or private or employed or part of a group is going to make it difficult to obtain data you need. To get accurate information for NYC - Pediatric Hospitalist you would need someone that works there or has access to location specific knowledge.
That said, MGMA older data (2 yrs) was $163 (25%) $262 (75%). Mean was $230. The reliability of that information is like "Is the soup spicy?" The answer is very situational specific. Take it with a grain of salt. If prior threads are believed, NYC is unusual in itself relating to contracts. Good luck with your search, hope you get solid offers that you can compare on your own. Just on the face of it, upstate and Long Island would be different than NYC. That's just New York.
There are a number of Pediatric folks that might be able to give better advice.

Just numbers for you to consider for a frame of reference.

Wow. 250k is insanely good in NYC. General EM and CCM have a hard time reaching that in NYC.
In my current region it's well south of 200k. Didn't realize NYC was a Peds gold mine.

Wow that blows. That would barely cover your parking charges to live in NYC.

Outpatient peds does way better then that upstate.

Parking at the hospital or at your apartment?
Primary reason very few beaters in NYC . The cost to have a beater exceeds the cost of the car.

161k seems more like it in NYC. No car needed, though, and you can jump the turnstile, at least in affluent areas

$140-170 in NYC is probably very close. Know a couple Peds folks there in primary care and PEM. If you’re willing to live elsewhere in the NE you’ll be better compensated

Gross -taxes- retirement (20%)- housing = spending (including loan repayment)
NYC will mathematically rank very low compared to the vast majority of the Pediatric-Hospitalist positions that a resident could consider. The financial impact of lower comp and HCOL you need to consciously run numbers to realize how significant it is for NYC. The geographic arbitrage for a different location are tremendous.

NYC (impe) is a very difficult place for almost any specialist to survive financially unless you are working a lot and/or start your own practice. Same in many places in CA but at least the weather is better.

NYC docs seem to be either first generation college grads happy to have any kind of professional job, or the generationally wealthy for whom it's a hobby. It's a weird situation.

Third segment - those who have grown up there who cannot imagine living anywhere else. Typically, these spouses tend to be more determined to stay put than the spouse who is from another part of the country. We do have one client who has managed to tear him/herself away to take a position in a midwestern city, leaving behind family and friends, and who keeps pinching him/herself about the financial/lifestyle difference, can finally afford a house, work less, nice ppl, etc.
