its to pick up the chicks. paradoxically, even though most men i know (at that time of their lives) somehow think it helps to pick up the chicks, most women i know couldn’t tell what kind of car it was anyways. i mean, they know it’s nice, but it’s just a conveyance.

I drove a 4-5 year old Mazda RX-7 as a senior resident and first-year attending. One of my girlfriend’s friends told her that I couldn’t be a real doctor, because a doctor would drive a much nicer car. (That friend drove a new Corvette purchased for her by her parents.)
I was single for many years, and I can tell you from experience that many (probably most) single women notice (and care about) a man’s car. That was true when I dated women in their 20s and still true years later when I dated lawyers, accountants, editors, architects, and financial service professionals during my time in Chicago.
It turns out that my wife doesn’t notice, and I sold my sports car after I met her.

We must hang out with different women!
Whats the matter with an rx7? I was driving a rusty faded corolla. With non working window on passenger side.
Just out of curiosity, when you say cared about the car, what does that mean? They wouldn’t date me and my corolla?

I would love to order a new Tesla Roadster at a cost of 200k. It sounds like an amazing piece of technology with over 600 miles of battery range and incredible acceleration, plus the styling is stunning. I wouldn’t even care about waiting a few years for delivery. For me, it’s kind of like planning a great trip, the anticipation is almost as exciting as the trip itself.
However, despite the fact that I could easily afford to pay cash for one of these outrageous toys, decades of careful financial habits have become far too deeply ingrained. Oh well, too bad, dream on…

So you mean to tell me you DIDN’T put your $50,000 deposit on a $250,000 founders edition, due for 2020 delivery?? ????

That's right, so far I haven't put down the 50k deposit on that red Tesla roadster that I am eyeing, but I ponder the potentially weird consequences of my decision.
My theoretical future grandchild might become one of those trust fund babies that gets to drive one. Doesn't quite seem right.

Agreed, CM. I have always driven a beater, so the bar was already quite low when I met my wife! The new truck that we bought was a real treat for us. It would be hard to manage expectations in the opposite direction.
My plan had always been a Porsche (low end by Craigy standards) as a reward to myself for fully funding college; I have a picture of it--among other things-- at the bottom of my spreadsheet. However, as we hope to be FICL (Financially Independent Cashflowing Luxury) by the end of the month, I am considering rewarding myself sooner. (While I still have hair and able to self-extricate, Vagabond!)

@whitebearddoc - I would wait until Tesla works out the kinks on the Roadster. Also - I think 200k is crazy to spend on a 2 door coupe. You can get an amazing certified pre-owned Porsche (or comparable vehicle) for less than half that price - although I acknowledge that these vehicles will not be as eco-friendly or tech-laden as the Tesla coupe.
G- if you're thinking of getting a Porsche check out Rennlist's forum which has lots of useful threads on choosing a CPO car.

Well, I was a popular guy when I drove a 10-year old Plymouth Valiant that frequently stalled in the middle of intersections, so it is possible to overcome some handicaps. However, when I was a med student driving the Valiant I frequently went clubbing with a law student who drove a late-model Mercedes. We always took his car, and the ladies always noticed.
Another lawyer who was a friend of ours remarked to me that when D (my law student wingman) met a woman in a bar he never failed to mention three things within the first five minutes:
1. He drove a Mercedes.
2. He lived in the Chase. (This was a very ritzy place by our standards at the time. I lived with 3 med school roommates in a roach-and-mouse-infested dump.)
3. His father was a doctor. (His dad was a psychiatrist back east. Whenever dad bought a new car, D got the old one; thus the Mercedes.)
I had not noticed this, but once our mutual friend pointed it out I realized it was true. All evidence suggested that this shtick appealed to the women he met.

maybe it depends on what your goals are when you are meeting these women!
how did you guys know who was the wingman and who was maverick?

The car matters in the course of regular dating. Twenty years beyond med school:
I met a lawyer through Match.com. Can’t remember the exact context, but I do remember that during the course of that first conversation she asked (hopefully), “So you drive a bimmer?”
Had a first date with an editor and walked her out to my car and she said, “Nice wheels!”
Dated an equity saleswoman for a while and she remarked that I had a nice car. It definitely mattered to her. A beater wouldn’t have been a deal-breaker (I hope), but the car was a plus.
I suspect that many of these women might have opted for a modest family car once settled with a man, but while on the dating scene they preferred an evening with the man in the sports car and Armani jacket. It’s just more fun.

Red flag for me tbh.

Its simply just social signaling theory, and no matter how stupid you may think it is (and it turns out is definitely at times), its even more important to recognize it exists for most of the population and they will make assumptions, judgements, and their views on you accordingly. I follow what I've loosely coined the 'threshold' version of social signaling. There exists a threshold of hygiene, clothing, home, car, speech, etc....and definitely the mix of them (different ones signal different things and some mixing is still beneficial overall) that makes you acceptable/presentable for your station/profession, anything more is at a cost premium and may/may not be necessary. Anything less can be detrimental even if you dont realize it.
Con men understand this and this is why they rent mansions, cars, and private jets to appear rich, successful and bring in those wanting to be the same.
During med school a friend and his brother bought a nice mercedes together, and whenever we would go out he would take that over both our dumpers. It was a good signaling vehicle for the clubbing scene for sure. Maybe not what you'd be trying to attract long term, but worked in this instance.
Obviously if we are in our pj's in the am and a suit in the pm, our skills/knowledge dont change, but peoples evaluation of them certainly do.

I like to think that my jalopy (in reality it's just an 18 year unassuming vehicle, the paint is fine and there is no body damage) is getting me closer to retirement. At Aldi, I usually find someone that has just finished with their cart to give a quarter to so I can get a cart. They are almost always loading their groceries by where I parked so they typically see my vehicle. About 75% of the time, they let me keep the quarter although I always try to give them a quarter. I'm assuming they think I need the quarter more than they do. I don't think I'd get the same gift getting out of a Ferrari. I'm going to retire...$0.25 at a time.

That’s crazy talk right there. Crazy talk. An RX-7 of any vintage is a classy vehicle that signifies its owner is classy as well.

I’ve always considered myself fortunate that I’ve never had a taste for true exotics – the fanciest cars I can picture myself owning might be in the $100-120k range (and yes, I realize that is still obscenely expensive), and tend to be more high-performance variants of nice but otherwise unobtrusive sedans.

Mazda RX-7's weren't made 4-5 years ago. Unless you meant to say Mazda RX-8?
