  • EIN sole proprietor

    Hello forum members,

I have an EIN used for my 1099 income (sole proprietor consultant). My wife and I are hiring a nanny, as well, who we will be paying in accordance with local, state, and federal tax rules.

Can I use the EIN used for my 1099 work to also "hire" a nanny, or should I apply for another EIN? The nanny is not related to my consulting work.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

There is no requirement for you to get a separate EIN, but I personally would do so simply to keep the 2 endeavors separated. Otherwise, the implication is that your business has hired a nanny, which is a little illogical. You can get one in 5 minutes online.
