  • Student - HDHP vs. Low Deductible

If you're planning on having children between now and becoming an attending, particularly while you're still in school, you'll probably want to go with the low deductible plan. Yes, getting the free $1,321.56/yr is worth having an HSA and no, you don't need to worry about contributing while you're in such a low tax bracket, but having a couple of babies will make that low $1,800 family deductible very appealing. Plus the HSA has an unlimited lifetime maximum - scary when you're in childbearing years. Other than that, I'd probably opt for the HSA and not worry about contributing until you are in better financial shape.
