Yeah, seems they're not satisfied with university advertisements anymore.  They brought the big guns this time.... Truck bed liners!

More IP's for WCI's ban list.

        And what did you find?

I don't think any of it is in the server the forum sits on. In fact, I'm told that they're actually manually registering to get past the Captcha.

We might have to move to manual email approval of new forum members if this gets bad enough. That would be a shame.

What about requiring moderation for new members who post their first thread in Chinese / non-English?

Why the heck would anyone want to waste their time doing that?  What benefit do they get from spamming you?  Are they just bored?  Weird

As always, it boils down to money. Same concept as the Nigerian prince who is looking to move his fortune.  Cast a large enough net and sooner or later someone will get caught up in it.

Forums are also great for SEO purposes.  Getting a few hundred links coming in from a popular forum boosts a website in search engine results.  Google's been getting better about filtering those out, but it still happens and not everyone uses Google, especially overseas.  People pay for link farmers to spam forums all the time.

Just the online world we live in.

Seems pretty easy to write a little script to see if there are more than 5? non-ASCII characters in the thread title, if so, then delete the thread. That'd at least deal with the Chinese ones.

Also, not allowing a users first post to have a link, might remove the english ones!

I was at a security conference the other day. They proposed that computer security is totally different and that hackers love security flaws that are there 1% ofthe time because they abuse that 1% a bazillion Times.

Crap, you passed me in post count while I was on vacation. I am going to have to bump the spammer threads to catch up.
