So basically his dad strong-armed him into choosing a career goal too early, he chose doctor because his dad was a doctor and that’s what he knew, and he wanted his dad to be proud of him, then after he accomplished what he told his dad he would do, he leveraged it to tell the masses what they wanted to hear and make a fortune.

That sounds about right. Never watched his show but my understanding is about the same as yours. Seems like he sold a lot of snake oil and people really like snake oil.

Or maybe his long term goal was to be a Senator?

That's the oddest part of the article. Pointing out the Senator salary and acting like he is choosing a life of public service. All these people do much better than their salary- wonder how that happens...

Woke up to this article. The tone of triumphalism was quite unpleasant with my morning coffee. Oz’ success came at the expense of his integrity. He got rich using his medical degree as a huckster for false health information. The story sounds much like celebrating a doctor who made it by starting a tobacco company.

I thought the article was interesting. I have never watched the show. Some people seem to crave the media spotlight. Sounds like his wife also brought some significant wealth to the party.

Frankly, I’d have more respect for a doctor who started a tobacco company, assuming that doctor was forthright about what it does and what the harms / side effects are. (I enjoy a nice cigar once or twice a year.)

Selling snake oil and lying about the benefits and harms is worse than selling a harmful (though legal) product and being honest about it.

I agree with you. Good point! I also enjoy the occasional cigar 🙂

Do most readers look up to people just because they have a lot of money? This article felt really . . . off-putting.

That is a pretty good point. I would not exactly call this dude a role model. He is like a Kardashian IMO.

Content editor is getting lambasted in the comments, IMO deservedly. If Mehmet Oz didn't happen to be an MD there would be zero reason for this site to give him the time of day. What's next, are we going to get an article about how Martin Shkreli got rich?
