Depends on what “compensation” means. Include 401k contributions? HSA contribution from employer? Ancillary income?

Anyhow, it’s helpful to see how many people actually responded to the survey for your field. Do I think 1% of my specialty represents a good sample? No.

Also, got to love the headlines about gender and racial disparities when making absolutely no attempt to control for any factors. Gotta keep generating clicks.

For family medicine the medscape survey is comparable to 2021mgma data

Would love for someone to explain to me how this works: "Since 2015, physician compensation has increased by 29% overall, 33% for primary care and 30% for specialists."

These Medscape reports always leave much to be desired, at best.

Interesting that reported mean incomes have outpaced inflation ~2:1 over the past five years or so though. Before 2022, of course.

Will take all this with a shaker of salt as always, though.

Self reported sampling (by volunteers), is not necessarily representative of the implied total population.
“"Knowing that I'm making the world a better place" increased from 12% in both 2015 and 2017 to its current 23%.”
The design of a survey will only show the results of questions asked. Does anyone really think physicians have doubled the contributions for making the world a “better place”?

I do think there is value if the data is taken in context. Hey, higher paying is higher paying on “average”. Very questionable on accuracy, I would “assume” that problem is the same across specialties.
The verbiage is speculative at best. Opinions published.

I make less than average.

The problem with the survey, of course, is that it doesn't account for most of the factors that affect income.

It doesn't ask how much I work. (answer is much less than average)

It doesn't ask how many patients I see per hour. (answer is much less than average)

It certainly doesn't ask how much I make outside of medicine. (answer is much more than average)

So it's useful as a rough starting place, but that's about it. The surveys I like best show the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentile for a specialty. Or show an hourly for a specialty. Much more useful.

But I do think it's good for a lot of docs to look at it and go, "Man, I'm working full-time and taking tons of call and I'm making $50K less than average in my specialty? Time to start looking for other jobs."

Same issue. While I'm one of those that believes there IS still a gender gap after controlling for everything, it's annoying to see people not even bother trying to control for anything and then claiming they've measured the gender gap.

I have yet to see a study that adequately controlled for all variables when studying this issue. Feel free to share one if you find it.

Of course it exists. Easy to measure that for anyone that can count.

The question is why, and whether it persists when properly studied.

And the answer thrown out in every attention-seeking headline and story, thus far, is both lazy and inadequate.

I was talking about any gap at all, which clearly exists, and also about a gap after controlling for confounders—which ENT pointed out and I agree is decidedly lacking in robust empirical evidence, and tends to instead be explained via clickbait headlines and intellectual laziness.
