I realize this is an illogical decision as I greatly prefer them to regular headphones with a cord, and it’s cheap not frugal, but I can’t do it.
You should really try them out - total life hack and game changer. Very comfy, lasts 4 hours on a full charge, easy to charge (assuming you haven't lose the charger box), and ergonomic with nice sound.

I really don't get the airpods. Aren't they like 200 bucks? For the past several years I've had these over the ear around the back of the head Bluetooth headphones that I bought for 25 bucks and they worked great. The past year I've been using the aftershocks bone conduction and even that was only $75. My old one lasted 20 plus hours on a charge and even these aftershocks last at least 10. I feel like airpods are only a thing because it's another Apple product that people have to pair with their phone and their watch. Dare I say status symbol?

Another “I feel rich because of the little things” - were going to beach soon. Had to throw out 3 bottles of neutrogenea sunscreen because of the benzene recall. First thought was “we’ll have to stop and pick some up, that’s annoying” not “there goes $40.

I agree. I also have the Aftershokz bone conduction Bluetooth headphones and they’ve been great. Are the AirPods any more comfortable than the corded headphones that come with the phone? I can’t wear those for more than about 15 minutes because of how much they hurt my ears.

Was picking up a sub at the grocery store before a shift today (which in and of itself is a luxury) and the old lady in front of me forgot her debit card pin. She was $10 short. I was running late and just covered it. Honestly, it wasn’t even me wanting to be altruistic; it was me not wanting her to spend 10 mins going through her groceries deciding what to put back. To her, this seemed huge. To me, no worries - rounding error.

As above, I find $5-$200 things the extravagances that make me feel rich.

I agree. "Rich" means not having to work or worry about money.

You put them in and they connect and they just work. You put them away and they're disconnected and charging. For my ears, they fit perfectly and sound fine. Take one out, music stops, put back in and it goes again. No more fumbling with bluetooth or wires hanging around. Before airpods it didn't feel like anyone really got bluetooth headphones right.

not sure if there are many other headphones that make listening to music/podcasts as seamless as airpods do

I also have the AirPods and enjoy them but for whatever reason Apple headphones are the only ones that will fit and stay in my ears. I don't like the ones that wrap around your ear. They were certainly pricey but I got them on a 120 month loan so it's all good.

We need an ama on this one. Only 120 months? I had to cash out my whole life policy for mine!

                    • Apple watch with airpods for fitness/running is a game changer. Don't need to carry phone and it just works.

With that being said I bought original airpods and now they have died which is frustrating. Debating whether 200$ is worth it for new pair....

You should try them out. Get them from Best Buy and you can return them if you don't like them. For me they're a big quality of life upgrade, especially in the gym. I can put my phone down, go do pull ups, etc. I use them on zoom calls for telehealth visits. When my current pair dies I'll replace them.

I have $50 anker bluetooth ear buds that have a charging case and pair automatically and have a 4-6 hour battery life. I think it would be hard to justify that airpods are 4x the product, if value was the main consideration. I use a lot of Apple products but IMO airpods are a case of the brand association that compels consumers to go with Apple by default.

I wasn't aware of the Ankers, I guess that makes me an Apple sheep?

Question is, do you think the Ankers are a superior product to airpods?

How’s the sound quality? My beats just stopped working so I need a new set of earbuds

Superior? That's hard to say and I don't think that's the correct standard to apply since they cost a quarter of the price. I would think the onus should be on the pricier product to demonstrate superiority. With regards to the ankers, I was an audiophile back in the day but now most modern headphones and ear buds sound pretty good to me. I would say they are very similar in sound quality, utility and battery life for a fraction of the price. Apple isn't the only company with bluetooth ear buds, google has their own as well. Most (all?) the other brands are cheaper than the airpods. Lots of reviews out there.

They sound pretty good to me, even the bass is adequate. I'm not an audiophile high needs listener, and they get the job done quite well. I would read some reviews though, the ones I have are from 1.5 years ago and I'm sure there are newer editions that are hopefully even better.
