  • Censorship?!

I started a thread talking about the election, but it appears to have disappeared.

This is a public forum but a private business so certainly its the prerogative of the site managers to remove topics they don't want discussed here.  However I think this group would have a lot of discourse that elevates well above what's out in the rest of the blogosphere and it would have been fun to engage in...

No censorship here. We, as moderators, moved that thread to the Lounge. You will find it there.

Sorry for the confusion - it was in the "Welcome" section and we decided it was was better suited to the Lounge, where we welcome provocative discussions!

The only censorship was your post that contained profanity that was edited. As you may not be aware, that isn't permitted here.

My censored post was on a different thread, and I don't even recall what I wrote. However you deleted the entire post, you didn't just "edit" the post -- did I just write a series of cuss words and black out?

The post had five words in it. One was a cuss word. Without the cuss word the sentence had no meaning. I figured it was an emotional day for everyone so I just deleted it and moved on without making a big deal of it.

The threshold to get moderated is much higher in the lounge, but profanity, pornography and similar still isn't allowed.

Fair enough. Perhaps I didn't write a line worthy of Shakespeare.

But I think something like f*** this s*** should be allowed. ?

I don't generally equate profanity with porn, but I guess we have different perspectives.

                  From the forum policy:

                  What are the forum policies?

                  A.

                  1. Forum participants are expected to behave appropriately as though you were speaking with others on the forum face to face in polite company with small children present. If you wouldn’t say it in my living room with my kids playing on the floor, you shouldn’t type it here. Pornography, profanity, belittling, ad hominem attacks, trolling, spamming, sock puppeting and other rude behavior is not permitted. It is okay to disagree, but focus your disagreement on the ideas presented, not the person presenting them. If it is obvious you will never convince someone with whom you are arguing, agree to disagree before the argument becomes personal.

Don't you have an "earmuffs!" policy with your kids?

That will only make sense if you saw the movie Old School.

Not every cuss word is derogatory or inflammatory, but your forum so your rules.

The Dude Abides. (From another amazing movie with a lot of profanity in it).

I agree with the spirit behind the forum rules. A physician-oriented site should have higher standards, IMO. There are plenty of places to cuss on the internet, if it is something that you feel compelled to do.

And I like people with a sense of humor, which seems sorely lacking here.

The internet is a hard place to appreciate nuance, but the smiley faces and references to comedy movies should make it clear I am having fun with this. I am sorry you can't appreciate that.

Pretty sure I said I respect the rules (The Dude Abides). I do not have a history of using profanity on here, even when I vehemently disagree with people. However even this forum is often an impersonal place, so I don't take the nanny state oversight personally.
