This is usually by invitation and done by pharmaceuticals, large labs and some middlemen companies that buy and distribute drugs. I used to do 4-5 a few years ago but now do mainly one or two. Usually in association with National society meetings or rarely one in May - Cardinal Health.

It is not something you apply for. I don't know how they selected my name the first time to email the invitation but being vocal and not afraid to voice my views has gotten me invited every year. They want you to be an active participant, even if you give negative reviews of the medications - someone who dares to say the emperor has no clothes.

John, I'm also an anesthesiologist doing a heavy amount of OB. I have the responsibility of teaching residents and fellows but outside of that I've also tried to figure out how to make the best use of that downtime.

This is how I spend it:

• Work on a blog which does provide some income, but not quite at the point Johanna Fox Turner mentioned yet


• Educate myself on how to add additional streams of income
  
  
  
  • Read up on investing both in real estate and the market, both books and online
  
  
  • Read financial blogs, both ones by doctors and not
  
  
  • Listen to podcasts
  
  
  
  

While educating yourself doesn't translate immediately into dollars, it'll pay off way sooner than you think. I'd have to say I learned how to analyze and invest in real estate from my call room, which led to a small portfolio that produces a decent amount of passive income for me. Outside of the hospital I dedicate as much time to family and friends as possible, and not reading.

You hit the nail on the head. It is not that you don't do anything interesting but they have gotten all the info they needed with the "screener" questions you answered and hence they found a good way to say that you are not qualified. This happened with telephone surveys and then with online surveys including Sermo surveys. So I have not touched a survey in 5 years. I learned this lesson well:

But I do take part in advisory boards where they guarantee to pay you a certain amount for your time. I learn a lot in these advisory boards from other participants.

Yes, they would, as long as you can contribute the minimum required by your custodian.

I guess I dont do anything interesting. The one I was able to complete never paid me. I'd certainly do it if worthwhile at all, but havent found any opportunities.

There was a great guest post on taking surveys for additional income. You can earn thousands with them, apparently.

I was thinking of doing some of those online surveys - they don't pay a ton, but wouldn't it give me the ability to open a solo 401k (via 1099 income)?

Hey guys quick question for you. I'm an anesthesiologist in a very heavy ob practice and find myself sitting at the hospital waiting on someone to deliver a lot. I passed all my boards and now I have a fair amount of free time at work. I was trying to come up with some ideas to make a little extra cash to pay off these stupid loans while I'm sitting up here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
