He seems to have personally imploded which will likely bring down Tesla, SpaceX, and Solar City.  Too much of these companies are tied up in one person.  Lack of diversification.

SolarCity was already brought down, only to be bailed out by Tesla. Nothing like robbing Peter to pay Paul. Same old story, release dates get pushed back, can’t develop the inventory, etc.

I remember how amazing I thought these shingles were about three years ago. The video I attached below blew my mind. I thought it was revolutionary not only from an energy effficiency standpoint, but also from a shelter/roofing standpoint, particularly in hurricane zones.

Unfortunately, this downward spiral has been occurring for awhile, I think it’s just finally coming to a head. It’s kind of sad because he’s a seemingly brilliant guy with truly revolutionary ideas. I hope he pulls out of this and rights the ship, I just don’t know how that happens at this point.

I reckon EM can string things along for a bit. His strategy of blasting short sellers with his tweets was always going to be problematic with the SEC.

I'm not sure if it is worse for Tesla than for J.D with the founder Richard Liu arrest recently. J.D is supposed to be the Amazon of China. Apparently they can't even have a board meeting without him. Which would be hard if he was in jail (Liu that is).

Tesla and Sears both demonstrate the folly of investing in individual stocks.

One was a media darling, a blockbuster growth company led by a visionary.

The other a 125 year old value stock with a reliable dividend that produced and sold the things we will always need.

Diversify, diversify, diversify. Diversification protects us from what we don't know and especially the future that is unknowable.

Until he cant of course. The issue isnt that hes getting in trouble for that, the issue is that brings discovery, which will undoubtedly unearth much worse issues. Also, the DOJ is doing similar and that case is likely to be magnitudes worse. You dont think shady financial or other issues have a high likelihood of going on in the background at this company? Musk has demonstrated zero remorse or moral line we can assume from, just that he is the most important thing and he will protect himself above all, which even if that starts small as things get worse it leads to a big problem.

Just look at the differences in SEC vs. DOJ consequences regarding theranos. SEC gave 500k fine, no admission of guilt, 10 years no serving as an officer. DOJ on the other hand, leveled charges that could put her in prison for a couple decades. The DOJ investigation is the real trouble. Whats crazy is how open/shut this manipulation case is (obvious of course given the tweets and facts), 6 whole weeks, the theranos thing was years long.

As mentioned on the initial thread, I agree with @WCI and this was partly the impetus for starting this thread, because its such a well known and beloved company/story and a lot of doctors are into it.

Innovation is messy.  Edison knew that.  Revolutionary innovation and translating that into manufacturing mass production?   EM is trying to be The Four Vagabonds all by himself, and he's getting in the way of himself unfortunately.

We own both the Model 3 and Powerwall 2.  If I wasn't such a chicken around fire, I would gotten the Flamethrower for kicks and giggles.

Though I'm a total fan and supporter of Tesla, I've sat on the sidelines of this stock -- even in my speculation fund that had the likes of Amazon, Visa, BOA, and stinkers like WaMu and BooksAMillion.  We stayed away from Tesla, the investment.   I think EM should have taken the deal, but again he got in the way of himself and it's may be a board action.   Q3+4 results will be interesting.

Musk settled, 20M for him and TSLA each. Did not have to admit guilt, stays CEO but gave up chairman (not sure this makes any difference), supposedly has to have 2 independent board members and a new independent chairman. We'll see what happens with that addition.

Smart move finally, as discovery would have been bad news, and the case was very easy. Price may skyrocket next week.

Of note, DOJ still incoming and will likely be less interested in quick win.

Not sure how that's much different than the one he refused on Thursday -- SMH.   self-inflicted 14% Friday drop for no good reason.

Maybe it’s part of his cunning plan (to lure in short sellers) ??

It would be surprising if there are not some lawsuits in the pipeline from investors and short sellers about company releases and tweets.

All off a duck’s back though.

Certainly will be those, but I imagine those will take much longer and be less public?

Certainly a big win for tesla the company, interested to see if these independent members can do whats right for the company and shareholders.

Still begs the question of how Tesla will raise more money. Given its bond rating, it seems like the best move would be to issue more shares as soon as possible.

Curious how the rest of the numbers will turn out for 2018. Regulatory costs and defending against upcoming lawsuits could make it impossible to reach profitability this year, though that may give Tesla an excuse.

I think it pops big, as it usually does on such things. Musk has already said hes going to spend 20 million buying the stock in pre-market (thin volume) to "pay-back" shareholders for the fine. Aside from being ridiculous, thats already somewhat a violation of his communication/manipulation constraints (as was the "leaked" email).

Nov. 1 200M for Solar City bonds come due.

Wild cards for profitability are accounting shenanigans, and how many ZEV credits they stored up and sold this quarter. This is how they achieved profitability 2016q3. Hoarding and selling all at once instead of steadily.
