  • Didn't Like Art Investing? How About Movies?

    Got this email today:
    Hey, Jim,

I’m Katherine Botts, Associate Producer for the United States Motion Picture Company.

I checked out your blog. It's neat to read a finance blog targeted at physicians.

Anyway, I wanted to reach out and tell you what my company is doing, something that has never been done in the U.S. until now – equity crowdfunding for a full length narrative feature film.  Not just any feature film -- the world’s first Christmas movie to raise funds this way.

If you’re interested in passive income and movies, well, we’ve just merged the two together.  Doctors find time in their busy schedules to watch movies, right?

I also think equity crowdfunding could be an interesting subject to talk about on your blog.  Or not.  No harm in asking, right?  But it could be another avenue for doctors wanting to Do-It-Yourself investing.

If you would like to learn more, please click the link below to go our campaign at the SEC-registered funding portal.  And feel free to ask us any questions, although per SEC regulations, we can’t talk about the terms.  Those questions have to be asked on the site hosting our campaign.

Warm Regards and Merry Christmas (257 days to go)!

Some people think I'm too into alternative investments, but look at all the ones I pass on!

This is not new. Saw crowdfunded movies like 3 years ago. People google search your reach/google rank and see you market to doctors and email. Doubt it's related to any exotic investments you may have. On a scale of "really into alternative investments" I'll assign a Montessori.

Depending on the setup this kind of idea (know nothing about this particular one) could actually be pretty cool. Once again devil is in the details and capital structure and how things are contractually written would be a huge factor. Always helps if you know the business already. Movies do some funny accounting to show no profits so theres lots of things you'd have to look out for, with anything really.

Wouldnt be bad to have lots of crowdfunding available through highly reputable sources to give access to things that you may not have had access to in the past. I wonder what effect a very safe, mature market for this kind of venture would have on standard capital markets.

Can we crowdfund a scrub of Lucas' updates to the original 3 Star Wars movies?  Now THAT I'd be willing to pay for.

I think it's time for you and your faithful sidekick ( a.k.a., me) to go to LA to check it out on their dime!

Well, I looked at their site, and I like it a lot more than the art site. The art site was vague and 'we got this', which who knows, might be perfect for that demo but Im not it. This site is quite detailed with how things work, pretty charts, description of involvement, etc...it doesnt make it any safer per se, but a better transparency level.

Do you get your name in the credits?
                How about any cameos?
Every movie needs a doctor right?
                Red carpet premium invitations?
I'm with Vagabond MD. You should have them fly you out to LA and check it out.

Vagabond MD has no availability. He's going on the trip of a lifetime. How about we send you to LA to check it out? I try to avoid LA whenever possible.

Alas, I have no idea what a BitTorrent tracker is.  Any guidance would be appreciated as I refuse to allow my sons to watch the updated versions.  Precisely why my parents still have their VHS player and recordings saved from HBO, albeit in poor quality by today's standards.

It's going to take a little effort if you're unfamiliar.  Think along the lines of napster.  You could use a program like utorrent, which facilitates the download of the torrent, but there are others as well.  Once you download the file, you can either play it on your computer or other compatible device or burn it to a DVD or bluray.

That said, the Harmy despecialized editions are works of art and worth the effort.

                              That's hazardous to my wealth.

Seriously though, I lived in Orange for a month for a rotation at UC Irvine. I went boogie-boarding most days, wishing for bigger waves. Then one day I got what I had wished for and I thought I was going to die.

You know what still bugs me about that month? That jerk who rented me a room kept my deposit. Never could get him to send it back.
