  • Location-neutral physician-specific CPA?

    Hi all,

I live in a small town and am looking for a accountant with extensive physician-specific experience. Fox & Associates seems amazing, but we don't really need services that are quite so comprehensive. We just need someone to help answer some questions about the S Corp I recently set up, help us decide whether to do something like a defined benefit plan to keep under the $315K limit, and do our taxes (I've been doing them myself prior to setting up the S Corp). It's hard to find a niche accountant in such a small town, and I don't need to meet with anyone in person.

Any suggestions about an accounting group/person/resource for location-neutral physician-specific CPAs?

    Thank you!

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the compliment. I think you may be underestimating the complexity of your situation and the value that a comprehensive CPA firm can bring. I’m afraid it might be difficult to find such a firm.

For some reason, CPA firms have not been as forward-thinking as financial services firms to develop virtual niches for clients across the US. I believe it is an obvious opportunity that just has not developed yet. I have seen a a few weak efforts that haven’t really gotten off the ground.

All of the niche firms I am aware of are local and regional, not national; however, that doesn’t mean you can’t find what you seek, just that I don’t know where to point you.

Good luck! This article may be helpful: How to find a great CPA

FYI I pay Laura at Fox an hourly rate for basically exactly this kind of thing.

She doesn't do my taxes but I ended up paying her for about 2 hours of advice on specific questions and she keeps a running timer of our convos.

Incredibly helpful for me and I don't have a yearly commitment or "plan."

Not sure they do tax prep on an ad hoc basis but I know Johanna can weigh in.

You wouldn't believe how hard it is for me to find people that do this. I am frequently asked for this service, but there aren't very many out there providing it. Seems like a huge opportunity for enterprising CPAs. There are hundreds of financial advisors focused on docs, but hardly any CPAs.

No, we don’t do tax prep on an ad hoc basis because, if that is all a physician needs, they can almost always DIY. That’s just not how we deliver value.

(edited to add) But thanks, as always, for the referral   .
